Features

  • Intense Arcade-Style Hockey Action: Experience the fast-paced, hard-hitting gameplay that made Blades of Steel a Nintendo classic, featuring bone-crunching body checks and thrilling on-ice fights. The game’s unique penalty box brawls and mid-period shootouts keep every match unpredictable and adrenaline-charged, setting it apart from other sports titles on the NES.
  • Dynamic Multiplayer Showdowns: Challenge friends in head-to-head two-player mode, where split-second reflexes and strategic passing are key to outmaneuvering your opponent. The competitive spirit is heightened by the game’s signature voice samples—like the iconic “Face-off!”—which immerse players in the electric atmosphere of 8-bit hockey arenas.
  • Legendary Teams and Realistic Mechanics: Choose from a roster of memorable teams, each with distinct strengths, and master the art of precision shooting and goalie control. The intuitive controls and authentic rink layouts deliver a true-to-life hockey simulation, making Blades of Steel a must-play for retro sports fans and Nintendo enthusiasts alike.
  • Exclusive Intermission Mini-Games: Take a break from the ice with Blades of Steel’s iconic Konami Gradius-inspired intermission mini-game, offering players a nostalgic arcade challenge between periods. This unique feature adds replay value and showcases the creative flair that made Blades of Steel a standout in the NES sports library.

Blades of Steel, in Japan known as Konamic Ice Hockey, is an ice hockey game developed by Konami and released for the NES in 1988 as a port of a 1987 arcade game. In Japan, it was released under the name Konamic Ice Hockey for the Famicom Disk System. The game was designed so that 1 player could play against the computer, or 2 players could play simultaneously against each other. In single-player mode, a player could choose from three levels of difficulty: Junior, College, and Pro. Two different game modes could be chosen. An ""Exhibition"" game is just one game. The ""Tournament"" option is a play-off style elimination tournament. Fighting was Blades of Steels most popular feature. Bumping into the same player multiple times will cause the two to fight. Punches would be thrown until one player fell. The loser is penalized while the winner is not. As in the real-world sport of hockey, the object is to score more goals than the opposing team to win the game.
