No! You can play the game in one player "Single Race" or compete in the Career type mode from "E" rated cars to "R1" cars. Online has multiple features but is not necessary to play the game.

Exciting racing game that’s a bit of a challenge for an “Atari era” old-timer like me. So far, I’ve finished 6-7 courses and I’m thinking I’ll be on “easy” mode for a while. It’s great that I can smash up a Ferrari without any repercussions other than subtracted point totals.
