Product Description

Song of the Deep is a metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a young girl's quest into the unknown to find her missing father. Combining discovery, skill, and suspense with an unforgettable narrative, this underwater journey will challenge players to explore, experiment, and skillfully navigate a vast ocean landscape.

Story Overview

Merryn waits all night for her father to return from his fishing voyage. He never does. After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she'll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn's courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.

Music

Song of the Deep's atmosphere of loneliness and wonder is brought forth emotionally through its music.

Gorgeous underwater world

Set in a gorgeous underwater world, players take on the role of Merryn in her quest to find her father. With a rickety submarine, Merryn will explore the vast ocean depths in this side-scrolling Metroidvania-style adventure game. Song of the Deep delivers unique gameplay in a tale of love, heartbreak, and triumph.

Explore a fantastic non-linear interactive underwater world, from ruins to boneyards to gardens. Every corner of the ocean offers a new surprise.

Upgrade your submarine with new abilities to access new areas of the sea, and combine your abilities in surprising ways like catching a torpedo with your claw arm.

  • Outwit, outmaneuver, and battle creatures along the way, from lantern jellies to giant bosses.
  • Experience an unforgettable journey: A powerful tale about a daughter defying impossible odds to search for her father.

Character Overviews

Merryn

Defined by courage, resilience and intelligence. She is alone and vulnerable in a very dangerous world, but she will not give up. She knows she is up against seemingly impossible obstacles but she believes in her ability to somehow find a way through. In the game, players will not actually hear Merryn speak her dialogue.

Free Diving

After the first 1/4 of the game Merryn finds the Diving Suit, allowing her to free dive outside the submarine. Free diving allows her to explore small caves, interact using her coral knife, and interact with sea creatures using calls of the deep.

MOVEMENT

Outside the submarine Merryn is still controlled using the left analogue stick. She can move and rotate at any angle, allowing her to navigate narrow passages. The player can actively tap the swim button to have her move faster through the environment, giving her a more physical swimming motion than the submarine.

Merryn's Submarine

Cobbled together but highly functional. It is far from state-of-the art. Yet it can be equipped with powerful light beams, boosters, sonar, magnetic tracking, grapplers and more. The sub cannot move quickly on its own, but instead must rely on ocean currents, jet streams to do so, or special upgrades. It is highly maneuverable though. It cannot operate without Merryn's guidance. In terms of firepower, it is not equipped with missiles or guns at the beginning of Merryn's adventure. It primarily uses its gadgets to defeat enemies or solve puzzles.

Much of Song of the Deep is spent piloting Merryn's submarine through open waters and dangerous caverns. Along the way you'll acquire new attachments to unlock new abilities and be able to upgrade the submarine and its attachments to take on greater and greater challenges.

Locations

Glow Kelp Forest

Large kelp forests grow in the rocky intertidal regions of the Singing Sea. From the surface they appear perfectly natural but below the waves the bulbs of this bull kelp glow with unnaturally inviting hues. The bulbs of the glow kelp often lay dark and dormant until movement nearby agitates into glowing, often triggering a whole forest to light up at once. Many island folktales of ghost ships and merfolk living in lost wrecks may have come from this phenomenon.

Merrow Ruins

These great stone structures caved into the sea centuries ago and have since been covered and forgotten. They were built by the Merrow to worship the ancient Formori ruins, which they thought were remnants of the gods. This network of temples was built around sacred Formori artifacts and culminates in a ring of huge stone slabs.

Forbidden City

The final resting place of the golden Formori city lies deep in a cavern beneath the surface. Most of the golden city is cracked or toppled, but one spire still stands whole. Many strange devices whir and run, offering haunting lights reflecting off of golden architecture. Inside the remaining spires, golden halls offer more strange contraptions and wondrous halls now flooded and silent.

Seagarden

A leftover experiment of the Formori to examine the strange ecosystems that bloom around the undersea vents. Over the centuries bamboo and other terrestrial plants have changed and flourished despite being underwater. What strange properties do these vents hold? and what other creatures have been evolved in the vents smoke?

Garden Halls

A large part of the Forbidden city of the Formori was buried when the Gadir Island volcano exploded. Some of the great golden halls, cracked open and laid bare to the elements, have become flourishing ecosystems. In these spaces kelp and coral thrive off of the golden glinting walls of royal halls. Formori tapestries and stelles are covered by seagrass and barnacles, hiding ancient histories.

Bone Vaults

At the height of the Formori empire they had a massive hunting fleet and would pull in great leviathans from far and deep. After they processed a large kill they tossed the carcasses into the abyss to be forgotten. The bone vaults are a maze of large and small remains, white and sterile, picked clean by strange sunless creatures. What else could the Formori have thrown into these vaults to be forgotten in the darkness?

And many more...
