Xbox Series S FAQs

What's the difference between Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Both consoles deliver next-generation capabilities powered by the Xbox Velocity Architecture, such as faster loading, the ability to seamlessly switch between multiple games with Quick Resume, richer and more dynamic worlds, and frame rates up to 120 FPS.

The primary difference between the two consoles is that the Xbox Series X displays games at native 4K, comes equipped with a UHD Blu-ray Disc player, and 1TB or 2TB of custom SSD storage. This console is also available in a digital-only version (without the disc player).

Xbox Series S is designed for disc-free gaming at 1440p (with the ability to upscale to 4K), with a 512GB or 1TB custom SSD. And, of course, they're priced differently. Both consoles have the option to expand available custom storage via the Storage Expansion Card.

Can the Xbox Series S play discs?

No. Xbox Series S consoles are all-digital gaming consoles for disc-free gaming. Disc-based games are not compatible with the 512GB or 1TB Xbox Series S consoles.

What is Xbox Smart Deilvery and do all games have it?

Smart Delivery is a technology introduced with Xbox Series X|S that ensures you always play the best version of the games you own for your console, across generations. Titles that support Smart Delivery automatically detect what device you’re playing on – Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, or Xbox One – and deliver the best version of the game available to you, ensuring you only ever have to purchase your games once.

For example, if you purchase the Xbox One version of a supported title, we’ll identify and deliver the best version to your Xbox One, as usual. If you then decide to jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X|S, we’ll automatically provide the optimized version of the game at no additional cost, if and when it becomes available.

Can I stream games from the Xbox Series S?

You definitely can. Xbox Series X|S supports remote play with the Xbox app, which is currently available on iOS and Android phones and tablets.

Which HDMI cable comes with the Xbox Series S?

A 2-meter (6.56 feet) HDMI 2.1 cable is included with all new purchases of the Xbox Series X (not including pre-owned). The Xbox Series S comes with an HDMI 2.0 cable of the same length.

How much storage space is available on the SSD?

The Xbox Series S comes with a 512GB custom SSD. However, a portion of this space for system is reserved for files and dedicated a portion for Quick Resume.

How do I add more storage to my Xbox Series S?

Xbox Series S is compatible with standard standalone hard drives, and products with the “Designed for Xbox” badge are supported by Xbox. For the best experience, we recommend the 1TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series S.

How can I transfer my games from my current console to the Xbox Series S?

You can transfer your games from another Xbox device via an existing USB 3.1+ external hard drive to use on Xbox Series X|S. You can play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games directly from the external USB HDD.

What is Quick Resume, and how do I use it?

The Quick Resume feature lets you continue multiple games from a suspended state almost instantly, returning you to where you were and what you were doing, without waiting through long loading screens. This feature is enabled by default and works in the background whenever you launch games. For some games, the Quick Resume experience will vary based on the game’s ability to suspend in mid-play.

What does the Share button do the Xbox Wireless Controller?

The Share button allows you to record gameplay footage.

Do Xbox Series X|S games support cross play with Xbox One?

Yes. If a game is available to play on both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, you’ll be able to play multiplayer with gamers from both systems.

Do Xbox One controllers and accessories work with Xbox Series S?

The Xbox Series X|S consoles are compatible with most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories, including the Media Remote, Chatpad, and Stereo Headset Adapter. The Xbox Play & Charge Kit also works, although it requires a USB-C cable for the new Xbox Wireless Controller instead of a micro-USB. Because the new controller is slightly smaller than older controllers, some third-party phone clips, batteries, and battery covers may not work.

Does the Xbox Series S have backward compatibility with older Xbox games?

Xbox Series X is backward compatible with thousands of games across four generations of Xbox. With Smart Delivery games, you can buy a game once and get the best version of that game for the console you’re playing on. To play a backward compatible game, search your library and select the game you want to play.

Can I play Xbox Series X|S games on other devices?

Yes, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can stream select Xbox Series X games to various devices, including:

  • PCs and laptops
  • Smartphones and tablets
  • Samsung Smart TVs
  • Amazon Fire TV devices
  • Meta Quest headsets
