Product Description

From legendary creator Keiji Inafune and the makers of Metroid Prime comes the “ReCore Definitive Edition”, an action-adventure masterfully crafted for a new generation.

Five Big Takeaways From Our Time With ReCore

by Elise Favis

ReCore is brought to us by Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune and his Comcept team, and by members of the Metroid Prime team at Armature. Mixing Metroid-style exploration with hopping and gunning similar to Mega Man, ReCore blends these elements into a unique experience of its own. Taking place on a hostile planet known as Far Eden after a failed terraforming project, Joule and her robotic companions fight for survival and attempt to save what's left of the human race.

At Gamescom, we played a portion of ReCore and saw a presentation focusing on customization and the secrets spread around the planet's wasteland. Here are five things we learned.

Your Robot Companions Have Unique Abilities

In ReCore, you have three sidekicks, including the robotic dog Mack, the spider-like droid Seth, and the hard-hitting, mechanical ape Duncan. Each have a lethal strike in combat which deals large amounts of damage, and they all have their own unique skill sets to help you out of sticky situations. Seth can grapple onto vertical or hanging tracks as you hold onto him, to reach higher vantage points and new areas. Duncan's beast-like strength allows him to smash boulders which can unveil loot. Other times, large rocks can unleash enemies; in our demo, Seth broke apart a boulder which let loose a flying, mechanical caterpillar.

Color-Coded Combat Is Tough But Dynamic

ReCore's battles center on a color-coded system. Using the d-pad, you can switch between Joule's blue, red, or yellow ammo to better attack enemies. If your enemy is red, then it would be most effective to use the same colored ammunition to defeat it. Your pulse charge is a handy tool that strikes more damage, as well as takes down enemy shields.

Switching between your corebots gives you an extra edge. For example, because Mack has a yellow core, he's perfect to use against yellow foes. While this may sound simplistic, it becomes a challenge when several different colored enemies are homing in, and some enemies have the ability to instantly change color.

A great call back to 3D platformer of old
rated 5.0 out of 5

Where to begin with this title? Let's knock the the complaints out first. As the game runs on the Unity engine, ReCore is not the best looking game out there. This mostly goes towards cutscenes however and not the actual gameplay. The other issues that ReCore has is that there are a couple locations that are kind of wonky in terms of the main character's (Joule Adams) character model falling through the floor. Those are the only 2 real complaints I can honestly come up with for ReCore however. Outside of those this is a fantastic game that proves to be an incredibly fun call back to 3D platformers, a genre that had hardly seen the light of day within the last generation aside from the masterful work over at Nintendo. ReCore takes place on another planet where the main character Joule is an engineer of sorts. When she starts seeing man made corebots going rogue she goes on an epic adventure to figure out what is wrong with these machines and make the world hospitable for human life. The main plot is quite simple, however ReCore makes up for this with pieces of lore lying about and through its quirky cast of characters, some of which due leave a bit of an emotional impact. ReCore puts a massive focus on it's platorming mechanics in order for the player to explore the world. Eventually Joule will find areas where she can no longer continue on, this is where the Metroidvania aspects of the game take place. Sometimes you need to continue on the quest in order to get past certain barriers. This isn't really that big of a problem as it builds a curiosity from the player as for what such locations hold in sectet. These upgrades are most notable among the corebots that join Joule on her journey. Each one has a different ability to traverse the environment or find secrets. Mack is a dog like bot that can dig, Seth is a cowardly bot that is like a spider which can climb certain walls (he is my favorite due his subtitled dialogue,) and Duncan who can bust open certain rocks as well as others. All of this coupled with secret optional dungeons which challenge the player's skill in interesting ways allow for a very rewarding experience. These characters also play into the game's combat system which keeps a steady flow of combat that feels very engaging. My only issue with the combat system is that it doesn't feel free to explore with certain abilities that would have cool to have seen Joule do such as a melee move, howeve I understand that only only so much could be done in the game. Plus, what is she going to do against robots the size of cars aside of shoot them? The bots however make the combat system more engaging in that certain colors bots are effective against others. It keeps the player engages with battle at all time with switching party members in combat while dodging enemy fire. On top of all of this, ReCore's visuals, while certainly not the best in cutscenes, actually have a nice artistic style during gameplay. You can almost imagine the heat of the sand with the lighting, and character models look great during gameplay. With all of this, I cannot stress enough the amount of fun I had playing this. There are issues with this game, however they are minuscule compared to the amazing qualities in exploration and combat we see within this title. If you enjoy games like Metroid Prime and 3D platformers I heavily recommend ReCore. I give ReCore a 9/10, but due to rounding I will give a 5/5 Stars on Gamestop.

I remember when the trail came out for this and it was advertised as one of the first games for the Xbox one. Being so, it has its bugs, is plagued with loading screens, and the achievement tracker is just broken. That being said, the story and concept is unique. Although, it is very repetitive towards the end of the story, requiring a massive grind and scavenging to finish it. Recommend just getting the definitive edition as it fixes some of the bigs and adds more content. By no means a great a game, but worth picking up preowned or on sale.
