This will be in 2 sections. Single and Multiplayer.
The single player is pretty good. It’s a bit better than the original. I didn’t really care for adventure mode but I liked it a bit more than on PS1. Felt a bit easier. Until you put it to classic and then to me it feels much harder. As far as time trials, I feel they’re a bit cheaty in the way that they REQUIRE you to know all the shortcuts AND to perfect your triple boosts. Otherwise it’s entertains enough to play while impaired via alcohol or to burn an hour after school. The addition of the Grand Pri thing is really REALLY cheesy. Even if I was the target audience, it’s really cheesy. It has a kind of charm but I find it annoying you can’t skip the intro for when you first launch the Grand Pri. Customization is excellent. Especially with the new bonus characters they add and the carts. Plus the option to change drive style. I just wish the carts had stats and handling instead of a “one size fits all”. Mario Kart has carts that have stats. This doesn’t. This has a one size fits all system. I REALLY LOVE the option to turn on legacy music.
Now to my main gripes. The *online* multiplayer. I do not enjoy playing multiplayer for very long. It is extremely enraging when your bombs don’t do anything when everyone else’s does. It’s like you got cherry bombs and the other players have massive C4. The bombs are inept and WORSE than in the original. Now the missiles feel as good as the original. Everything else feels great. As far as the enraging part, if you do not know how to boost or have a minimum grasp, you will get obliterated over and over. The MTX’s are minimal and you can make them easy in online mode IF you have a general idea of how to win. In single player, it’s extremely stingy. Even the nitro during Grand Pri. Plus, $20 pretty much buys you most of the dlc items anyway. I know it’s trash activision but I know a good chunk goes to the developers and for FREE dlc, I can afford to donate some more money to them. I know I’m filth. Not many people deserve my money.
It’s a great game worth your time if you want a little more of a challenging kart racing game. If you like Mario kart, you may like this or despise it. If you hated Mario kart and played this as a kid, you’ll love this game.
