Nice to be in the Chopper Cockpit!

I honestly didn't know there was an Apache simulator for the 360, but was happy to come across this one. I LOVED gunship back in the day and feel the same about this game. There is a nice variety of helos to pilot and several types of missions from search/destroy, recon, and close fire support. The tutorials were quick and I honestly had to play through missions a few times before being comfortable with the controls and game options. I like that the AI co-pilot can act as your gunner and will fire independently of you which is helpful when surrounded or making strafing runs. All in all a solid, not on the rails, sim that I enjoy and definitely recommend.

Something Different than your Normal Shooter

This is the first of it's kind of game that I've played on the Xbox 360, being a flight simulator of some kind. It is a Helicopter fighter simulator, so obviously you'll be flying around gunning down ground infantry, boats, and of course other helicopters. The only thing I've played similar to this, is flying Helicopters in Battlefield 3 and the Google Earth Flight Simulator. This game was a definite switch of style for me. This game gave a great first impression, and I will probably try out more Helicopter and Airplane fighter games in the future. I can't say it has many control problems, but it takes some major getting use to and practice to be able to fly correctly. I switched back and forth between beginner and realistic settings here and there as I figured out the controls, although switching difficulties changes almost the entire control layout. There are around five different helicopters you can fly in this game. In the campaign they will be automatically selected, as well as your weaponry. There are also two other game modes though, Free Flight and Squad Operations. In Free Flight you can set up everything to your liking, such as the enemies, the helicopters, the weather, and weaponry. I would recommend playing Free Flight some because it is basically your Tutorial setup the way you want it. Squad Operations is Apache's multiplayer, which is basically a second campaign almost. I would like to say it's great fun, but since I'm so late to the Apache Air Assault party, there is nobody online to play it through with. It can still be played solo or local Co-op, but it would've been nice to play it with live players. Pros +Something different rather than playing all the First Person Shooters +Challenging and fun once you get the hang of it +Somewhat realistic +Great graphics +Local coop +Customization of helicopter's looks +Not too long, not too short Cons -Controls can be hard to get used to -Three or Four of the missions seem near impossible, but can be passed -The helicopter seems to not want to ascend rather often even when your heli isn't damaged -When attempting to pick up speed, you may find yourself diving toward the ground or with a terrible camera angle -It's hard to pay attention to the storyline, because all you want to do is skip the cutscenes and start blasting stuff -Taking down enemy helicopters can be a major pain. You'll think there going down in that black smoke, but they seem to just keep on fighting Overall Verdict: This is a great Helicopter Fighter simulator that will entertain anyone who likes shooter games as long as you can get use to the controls and defeat the hard missions.

Favorite Game so Far

This game is awesome. A really great game such as this one isn't necessarily easy to master. Every mission that you attempt, as you progress through the many missions to defeat the enemy, helps to sharpen your skills and make you ready for the next mission. When you get frustrated the best thing to do is to work on your shooting accuracy. The game play is awesome. In the heat of battle as you destroy the enemy you hear rockets whizing by you and bullets hitting and bouncing off the tough skin of the Apache. Before getting this game I read a review written by an active Apache pilot who loves this game and said that the game play was very realistic. The best improvement for this game would be getting more campaigns and new missions so that the challenge is continually refreshed.

Kick the tires and light the fires!

Gameplay gets a 10 because the Apache handles like a real chopper would, with realistic controls, and you can use TADS along with DVO and FLIR for that gritty real-world feeling of raining down lead from 2 miles away through a black-and-white filtered optic mounted to your 30mm cannon. Full damage affects each part of your chopper both visually and control wise. Lose one engine? Adjust the collective (throttle) to maintain altitude. Lose both? Better look for a safe place to land [crash]! Graphics receive a 9 because the aircraft are so meticulous detailed you have to see them to believe it. The terrain is also gorgeous (and extremely varied, depending on where you are in the world), and the ground objects look quite detailed as well. Some people around the net are dismissing the graphics saying they are only average, but I strongly disagree and question how they drew this conclusion. The entire landscape was taken from 3D satellite imagery (not flat imagery) - heck even the trees look good. Which is a plus when you're flying 10 feet over the top of them, tracking targets and yelling at your co-pilot (your friend, who can be your gunner!) to SHOOT SHOOT! Sound gets a solid 8, with only a few points taken off due to repetitive soundtrack and a sound bug. However, the developer is aware of the bug and has a patch in the works. All the missile, rocket, cannon, explosion, etc. sound effects are great and realistic, and will fill all 5.1 channels nicely if you are lucky enough to have surround sound. Lasting appeal scores a 10 because EVERY mission in the campaign can also be played via Local co-op (pilot and gunner in the same chopper). Also there is Squad Operations mode, which has a whole page of SEPERATE co-op missions (different than the campaign missions), flyable online with 2-4 players (1 player per chopper). These can also be played by yourself, but be aware, they have been designed to be fought out with at least 2 choppers, so they can be quite hard depending on the mission. I see this as a good thing though. And finally, there is the much sought after Free Flight mode, where you can adjust everything from time of day, weather, location, to the number of ground/air units, their difficulty/skill level, number of friendly A.I. ground/air units, and more.Included in that 'more' is the ability to fly as the legendary Russian Mi-35 Hind helicopter in free flight. It is also flyable in a number of Squad Operations missions! Not enough? How about multiple skins for all of the helicopters - there are 3 Apaches (AH-64D Longbow, AH-64X, AH-1), the Mi-35 Hind, and MQ-8B Fire Scout - all flyable with several skins for each. Still not enough? How about you throw some decals on your chopper? Angry eyes, shark teeth, symbols, shapes, etc. can all be 'painted' on your chopper. I can vision a versus mode, more choppers, and lots more missions coming via DLC...which would be purchased immediately by this armchair pilot. All in all this turned out to a totally fantastic game (well worth the $50 asking price), and probably flew in under your radar. Pun intended. I suggest you buy this game immediately if you have any interest in helicopters, the military, combat, or flight in general. Support the developer and buy it new (it's not even $60)! All of us flight-junkies want to see more games just...like...this...

Good Apache Sim, Not for everyone

The Goods: 1.Once unlocked, the realistic controls provide excellent approximation (I chose that word carefully) of helo controls. 2. The local co-op is fun, even if the gun cross is hard to see at times. on line multiplayer with a friend is fun. 3. Single player is fun and challenging. The Bads: 1. Learning curve is steep, especially if you have never flown a helicopter and don't understand the physics. I have flown both and the realistic controls aren't bad for a console, but they're not "real." 2. Graphics for "afghan-like" country are dated and seem rushed. The bad guys look and die like toy soldiers. No "ragdoll" effects here. 3. Some of the sound for the 30 mm gun is very tinny, kind of MIDI cymbal-esq. This game lives in a niche that is undersupported in consoles, that of flight simulation. It brings a lot of good features at the expense of some of the ones you'd probably expect like cutting edge graphics. I fly on line with a friend of mine (also a former military aviatior) and we both love the game, but he had to buy it for us to fly together. I've never seen another person on-line. The local co-op is fun, one flies and the other shoots. It requires teamwork. The controls start out in easy, but the realistic controls, once unlocked, are much better and provide great maneuverability and add a lot of realism. If you are looking for a FPS style helo experience like in BF seried, this isn't for you, you will be frustrated with the controls. Enemy AI choppers are hard to kill. Dogfighting in a helo is MUCH different than a fighter. If you are looking for a more simulation-esq helo shooter that feels like a follow on to Gunship or Apache from days of old, pick this one up. It has staying power simply for its uniqueness. You will be underwhelmed by some of the graphics and surpised by others. If you like flight sims and want one for your XBOX, pick this one up.
