Close but not perfectTough plastic protects from drops, but isn't a 100% secure hold, and I can hear/feel the joy-cons shift around as I play. This may be because the release buttons have this hard rubber plunger keeping the joy-cons from laying flat in the armor guards. These plungers are operated by these awful cone shaped "buttons" (I hesitate to even call them that) that barely work unless you press really hard, and that causes a lot of pain on the fingers. The grips themselves feel fine when detached from the system, but can't be used with the controller grip.
The joystick pads work great and are the best thing about it, but aren't really worth the price for just them. I got these used for the very discounted price of $9, and even then felt like I over paid.
Overall, great for big hands and clumsy people, but those release buttons were poorly designed.

Adequate for home but not travelI bought these to protect the joy cons while my 10 year old son played. These armor guards make it difficult to remove the joy con and makes it difficult to connect to the controller grip. The package needed to be cut to get open and I am unable to return the item. I may end up using these for joy cons at home but they are terrible for travel.
