Psychonauts holds new platforming elements, but still stay true to a few aspects while taking you on an adventure like no other. The gameplay is addicting and there are plenty of things to do. Ranging from powering up your psychic abilities, to gathering figments in the minds of people you meet. A strong, captivating story engages you in the game and forces you to find out more while you come across a comical cast of characters. The world and areas you set in make you feel like you are living it because of the beautifully crafted graphics and the constantly growing number of new things you encounter through out the game. The extremely high replay value of the game is another driving factor that makes the game a classic. After you finish it, you essentially feel like doing it all over again, just to make sure you didn't miss anything. This game truly brings new life to the platforming genre, is must have for any gamer and will make sure you squeeze out the last bits of excitement and adventure as you delve into the world of Psychonauts.

Game Play and Plot

In Psychonauts, the game play throughout tied together with the plot well. The first two minds Raz enters to begin his quest of becoming a Psychonaut are Coach Oleander and Sasha. As I traversed through there mind and shuffled through their memories, I understood that their past experiences foreshadow the obstacles Raz will have to overcome in order to fulfill his destiny of becoming a Psychonaut. This connection made the relationship between plot and gameplay really important to me. I felt that, what I was experiencing as I explored through their minds was important to my quest and what I had to accomplish in order to reach my goal. The cut scene in the beginning were also relevant to what I was undertaking and didn't take away from the game play. As I played further into the game, the gameplay started to display characteristics about Raz himself. For example, in Lungfishopolis, when Raz encounters the giant mutated fish, his caring nature adds depth to his character and overall effects the game play. It effects the game play because, as Raz's personality and traits become apparent, the decisions Raz makes during game play effect the flow of the plot. A few aspects of Psychonauts however tainted my enthusiasm. As I delved into the many other minds in order to fulfill Raz's destiny, the cut scenes started to become irrelevant to the game play and the game play seemed to lack connection to the plot. For example, in the insane asylum where Raz encounters Edgar, the game play (searching for the cards and fighting the four mini boss fights) lacked depth and, at least to me, was just a way to add length to the game. There was no deeper meaning to the tasks and challenges presented to Raz, it was just a way to give him something to do instead of ending the game sooner. Another plot element is the love connection between Raz and his fellow camp mate. The love element added depth to the plot but as for game play, the relationship didn't effect game play at all. There were not many challenges that involved Raz and his love interest and the only really evident knowledge of his interest in her is through cut scenes and minimal game play. Overall, the connection between game play and plot is good and it adds depth to the game and makes it all the more interesting.

Psychonauts is absolutely AMAZING!

From the quirky dark humor, to the awesome storyline, this game is awesome!!! The characters are memorable and lovable. You get cool powers that let you set things on fire, pick things up with your mind, shield youself and many more! Even after you play the game all the way through you still have more game play you can do. You can go collect hidden treasures and buy customizable things for Raz. It can be a bit frustrating at times when you get stuck, but it is well worth it in the end. The gameplay is very fun as well, you get to go godzilla and destroy buildings in one of the levels, you also get to play mattador against a huge bull in one of the levels. It has wacky characters, levels, powers, and challenges you wont be bored i promise! A huge A+++ from me, you will love this game to death!

This game brings the creative colorful characters many of us remember from when we used to watch Saturday mornings to our tv once again in Psychonauts. The voice actor may sound familiar to those that followed Invader Zim closely enough to recognize him. Psychonauts is a game full of mystery, physics, psychotics and humor. You play as Raz a runaway to a camp where his psychic powers are not feared but smiled upon and encouraged to bring them to a new level. The characters are all amusing and have their personal lives displayed in the game better than any game I've played yet. Simply walking close to characters you can hear conversations, musings or even humming. The fact that Raz will give you hints and remind you the task at hand by commenting on what he needs to do next is very helpful for those that are absent minded at times. The game controls are solid and that is helpful when things get a bit hairy, the camera however can be a little bit of a problem as it free swings sometimes and ends up staring at a tree instead of Raz. This however is easily remedied by the wonderful camera reset that puts you in perfect view of Raz, the camera's sensitivity can also be adjusted in the menu options. The graphics are cute and well done, as far as I've seen there are no walls to walk through or invisible walls magically in the game. The animation is well done and very smooth, no bumps or glitches that I've noticed. The length is perfect for people that don't want a game that takes a month to get through, this is also attributed to a medium challenge level, which I feel gives a good experience so your not too frustrated or easily bored. The sound is wonderful, like I mentioned earlier you hear conversations, musings and humming when near the other characters. Interface is a tab bit different from most games and takes a few minutes to figure out, once you have it down it's easy to use and makes life easier by keeping track of what you have. The story line is well thought out, a tiny bit clinched and it's non-linear. Which makes the game a little different every time you play. Dialogs are good and rather funny at times as this game relies on humor for a good majority of the things that go about. Overall I'd give this game an 8/10 for just being a little different and alot of fun even for the older gamers like us.
