Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - PlayStation 3

Features

  • Continuing the Story - The story picks up immediately following the events of the original Persona 4 Arena. As the heroes search for the mysterious force behind everything that's happened, the Midnight Channel begins to air once again in the town of Inaba. Now set in the real world, the P-1 CLIMAX is ready to be revealed!
  • A Deep and Varied Roster of Playable Characters - Joining the fight anew are the fan favorites from Persona 3: bat-wielding Junpei Iori and the live action superhero actress, Yukari Takeba! A mysterious new character, Sho Minazuki, doesn't have the power of Persona. But with his fighting techniques involving two katanas and his intent to destroy whoever stands in his way, he will pose a huge threat to the Shadow Operatives and the Investigation Team. Worse yet, there seems to be someone who looks just like Sho, and actually wields a Persona...
  • Unique Battle Systems - P4AU adds all-new depth to its combat system. Most of the characters now have a "Shadow" version with completely different fighting mechanics and other technicalities that appeal to the hardcore gamer and newcomer alike. The existing characters have new moves in their arsenal as well. Can you pull off the ultimate Instant Kill move and triumph over the opponent in style?

When you get the developers of Blazblue and the team behind one of Atlus' most popular franchises together this is the result. The three dlc characters cost $15 extra and you can purchase items that you can unlock normally through game play. Other than that this is a great game for fighting game fans. If you are new to it however, I would recommend going though the tutorial and then trying easy mode before playing on the higher difficulties. Also, online multiplayer is very shallow so focus on single player or local multiplayer instead.

I am so surprised with this game. The combat is intense and extremely balanced. The story is a great, new adventure for Persona fans. The only downside I can say about this game is that the story mode features hours and hours of cut scenes and dialogue but only roughly 30 minutes of actual fighting. BUT THIS ISN'T EVEN A BAD THING. Persona 4 Arena was a good game but Ultimax really gives all of us Shin Megami Tensei fans something we were wanting.

I had been considering this game for a long time, and I'm glad I did! The story is quirky and well-done, and the characters all feel unique enough to give it a solid feeling each time you play someone new. It's always best to play with friends around, too. :)

P4U is a fighter first, a sequel second.

If you have played Persona 4: Arena, you likely recall the lengthy and often redundant story mode which continued the journeys of both Persona 3 and Persona 4 characters. While I enjoy any chance to see a continuation of either P3 or P4, Persona 4: Ultimax has a story that borders between interesting and unnecessary. While it is good to see new characters added into the mix, the story recycles many elements for Arena, changes them (for the better), but ultimately tells the same story that wasn't too groundbreaking in the first place. While this far from ruins the game, Persona fans playing strictly for the story may not feel justified in picking this for the full retail price once everything is said and done. Fans of the series who happen to be fans of complex 2D fighters (or fans of just the latter) will be more than pleased with the changes and additions made to Ultimax. All of the fighters have been tweaked and rebalanced to a degree and have a "shadow" version which brings a new twist to familiar fighters. Without going too deeply into the mechanics, rest assured knowing the fighting portion of Ultimax is vastly superior to that of Arena, and that is a very good thing. Ultimax is one for the fighting fans and the introduction of new modes and layers of polish make that evidently clear. Still, fans focused on the story shouldn't count themselves out entirely as once the initial confusion on how to form basic combos and strategies fades away, there is a lot of fun in mastering your favorite characters from the series and seeing just what they are capable of.
