Product Description

From producer Yoshinori Terasawa and game designer Takayuki Sugawara, the creators of the Danganronpa series, comes a new type of survival game, Zanki Zero: Last Beginning. Explore ruins, dungeons, and islands in this post-apocalyptic world through the POV of eight protagonists fighting for survival while also searching for meaning in their never-ending cycles of life and death.

God created the world in seven days. It only took one for humans to destroy it. Life as we knew it sank to the depths of the sea...until yesterday. We do not yet know this broken world or the reasons for its downfall left behind here. An earth where ruins drift about, with remnants of buildings, cars, traffic lights... Modern civilization was destroyed, becoming nothing more than debris wading in the sea. New ruins drift one after the other before our very eyes, the survivors who live on one of those decaying islands.

  • Play from the POV of one of eight protagonists in each chapter and explore the dungeons, towers, and islands to uncover the deadly sins of the protagonists' pasts.
  • Hunt for materials and food while fending off monsters in real-time battle environments; but don't forget to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom (seriously, it's bad for your health and fatal for your party).
  • With every life cycle lasting only 13 days, each clone's stats, abilities, and capabilities differ as they grow from youths to old age. Depending on how you die, you can even earn bonus upgrades for your next life cycle. Take advantage of each life to the fullest.
  • Enjoy original Japanese and English voices and English subtitles.

Decent, But Not Great
I bought this since I'm a huge fan of the Danganronpa series. It felt like the developers were riding on the waves of their past success with this rather than trying to create something great. (There are several little Danganronpa nods, so they definitely knew what they were doing!) The story is fun, but rather predictable. And that is the name of the game. With a focus on death and rebirth, there is a great deal of redundancy in this game both in the story progression and gameplay. The gameplay feels more like an action survival than a survival RPG. When characters die, you must return to homebase to bring them back to life. Since they can also grow old and die of old age, even level exploration can require multiple trips back and forth. Although I went into it with the realization it was a dungeon crawler, somehow this isn't quite what I was expecting. I'd recommend trying out a demo or something first before investing in it. I think some people could really like the game, but it won't be for everyone.

Great game and story the combat is only there to move the story forward so it is what it is I guess but I don't mind it overall I really like this game definitely has that Danganronpa feel to it.

7/10 story dragged down by 1/10 gameplay

Bought this because I'm a huge fan of the dev's previous work, Danganronpa. That said, if you're not a huge ran of survival gameplay, this is not the game for you. Even on medium difficulty, the game goes out of its way to make sure your characters die quickly and easily. Where the game is centered around death and rebirth, this makes sense, but the lack of a quick resurrection tool means one wrong move will send you into a sometimes hours long tailspin. One story moment in particular lead to one character being singled out, then attacked by poison monkeys. If you get hit once, you get poisoned, which has no antidote yet, because you need to bring their claws back to home base to make an antidote. Poison stops life regeneration and ticks health rapidly. With no way to heal, I died shortly after. From one attack. On medium difficulty. In chapter two. Game over. After multiple hours of beating my head against unintuitive gameplay I dropped the difficulty to the floor so I could at least finish the story, and I'm glad I did, but the gameplay was unbelievably bad.
