Torment is extremely a throwback to the CRPG heavy hitters of early BioWare and Black Isle Studios (RIP) titles like Baldur’s Gate and its spiritual predecessor and namesake, Planescape: Torment.
This game has a lot of reading in it. Like, a lot. This could practically be described as a “visual novel” though the usual connotation that phrase carries with it don’t match up. But i truly liken this game to falling into a densely packed fantasy or sci-fi novel. And the writing is good! The character work is thoughtful and considered, the quests come to satisfying, sometimes unexpected conclusions. Honestly there is so much up in the air conceptually here that you need strong writing like this to have an anchor point, something to keep a first-time player connected without getting lost among all the made-up jargon.
If you play RPGs and just devour the lore offered within, this game has so much for you. If you’re the type to look for ways to lie, cheat and charm your way out of (or into) fights, this game is for you. if you crack open a story of such high-concept sci-fi that every third word is complete nonsense, and you LOVE IT? This game is for you. I just hope you brought reading glasses, or a real big TV.
