I've never spent much time with hack-and-slash style games, or the type of aesthetic this game initially presents- but it is an absolutely wonderful ride. The story, the characters, the varied gameplay modes, the imagery, the music... it's a beautifully produced game and grabbed onto me the moment I started playing and never let go.
The world is not as "open" as many games strive for, and instead the locations you spend time in slowly reveal more of themselves to you and are focused on a more intentional presentation. I felt the missions were varied enough to keep it very interesting and I had plenty of places to explore. Meanwhile, the core store missions are obvious and easy to get back into.
Some might not light the "cinematography" because it frequently uses mild colors and even looks washed out in a sepia-like filter. But this is well used to make the brighter scenes DYNAMIC in my opinion. My only criticism is that there's a part of the game where it tends to feel convenient to start doing side quests, but pretty much every other moment of the game has an urgency in the narrative that makes it feel like it isn't the right time for side quests.
This game is great art, with soul and passion evident in it. I encourage anyone who considers it to pick it up and play it without looking at too much more or risking spoiling it. JUST PLAY IT, and savor each moment.
