Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom's storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. With a standalone story that also delves into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, players can enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed “ARCUS” system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.

New-age JRPG done rightLately I've been disappointed in Triple-A JRPGs. They've seem to have lost that charm which made them feel so lively, their characters! It used to be that you would care what would happen to these fictional people that grow closer to your heart as their chaotic stories advance, sadly that is not the case in most RPGs of late. However, Trails of Cold Steel delivers. This game has a fantastic cast of characters, some more original that others but all fit very nicely together in this world. The pacing of the character development never feels forced and every step through the story makes you feel closer to them as their backstories become apparent. The world itself is very well crafted with many diverse locations, complete with a place to call home for when you are done exploring the world. Combat puts me in mind of an easier, slower paced Chrono Trigger which is nice. And the English voice acting is actually done incredibly well, however the occasional lack of voiced lines can feel awkward at times. Music is fantastic. Equipment, skills, and inventory systems are all on point and customization abounds. Its easy to play little bit here and a little there with long breaks in between without having to relearn how to play. All and all I'd place this as one of my top RPGs. I'm very much looking forward to the second iteration of this amazing series.

Falcom PUNCH!The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is hands down one of the best RPG's I ever played in my entire life. I already spent 125 hours so far and I'm still going! It's still my first play-through! The amount of details in this game is shocking. Every house has different decor and furniture, the pictures and paintings look like taking out of real life, reflections and shadows of characters, the list goes on. This is an rpg you could easily get lost in and feel like you are actually living in the game. The story centers around Thor's Military Academy in Crossbell, (the capital of Erebonia.) Every student there (both main and side chars), have their own personal reasons for joining the academy. As you progress you develop a strong connection with the lovable cast and watch as they train in both academics and practice warfare/military tactics. This game has many plot twists that will keep you guessing throughout the entire game. It has a lot of comedy in the game which is good considering how dark and twisted the story is. The game goes very much in depth about the harsh realities of war and how it effects not only the country, but the citizens too. The game has very much replay-ability, as you have to at least play-through the game 3-4 times to get all the cut-scenes, choices, and bonding events. The game takes place around 5-10 years after the events of the last Trails in The Sky game. Don't let that discourage you though, It has it's very own new story, places, and cast. Though, for fans of Trails in The Sky, you may come across hearing some familiar destinations, and characters. Recommended for rpg lovers who like a very in depth story and cool character cast, along with any seasoned Trails Veteran. It uses a 3-D style turn based combat system similar to Hyper Dimensional Neptunia, but adds it's own flavor with linked attacks and support(depending on how high your affinity is for the chars.) I'm VERY excited for Cold Steel 2 coming out in September! Don't skip this awesome series! 10/10.

Proof that there is a thirst for old RPGsThis game is wonderful. it's turn base and yes . I know some of you may have thought that no one likes turn base anymore.. well thats the loud Minority for you.. Look at how well of a reception this game has recieved and the sequel ( Cant wait ) it will be awsome..
and all the turn base RPG's are on the Gameboy 3DS.they all sell great.
If they just will use their heads they would relize that the silent majority enjoy this type of game more then a button smasher.. as long as it has a great story and character development , along with the leveling up, and equipment they can get away with games such as Dragon age which I loved, and Mass effect which again I loved..and the best Action RPG the Witcher 3.
there is no logical explanation as to why we dont get the dozens of turn base JRPGs that would sell here.. Japan is mislead into thinking we dont want them.. let this game and all the 3DS games show as proof that we want them.
Sorry I got on my soap box, and will be thrashed for it. come on lets see those "Not helpful" numbers add up lol.
So to summerize this is a GREAT RPG and if you like JRPGs you will love it.

Great Story and EntertainmentThe game starts off a little slow and predictable but as the game goes on it pulls you into it's pace until you just can't help yourself from wanting to keep playing. Can't Wait for the next game to come out!!
