Basic plot and lack of story

I bought this as I saw someone play through recently. The basic story and confusing directions on objectives make this game less than challenging. The avatar side is much better playing in my opinion than the human side. Fighting the jungle and the navi make it tedious but not more fun. If you do everything to level up and progress the character it still feels bland and unnecessary.

========= Short Review ========= Avatar: The Game for the PS3 is best summed up as being a graphical splendor that encapsulates a rather bland and average title. ========= Story ========= The story of Avatar: The Game for the PS3 is a prequel to the movie, but it requires knowledge of the movie to enjoy it. This isn't a big deal now, but it was a common complaint when the game first came out. I'll also admit that the story is rather dull from what I've seen so far since you'll spend most of your time running around on fetch quests in a long narrow hallways that are occasionally filled with enemies that seem to emerge from nowhere. The story just feels dull and uninspired. ========= Gameplay ========= Depending on which side you choose to play as this game either feels like a rather average third-person shooter or a rather bland action-adventure game. I'd honestly recommend playing as the humans since they specialize in range attacks and are an easier faction to play as unlike the Na'vi which rely more on melee combat and will rather easily fall against rapid machine gun fire and will leave the player honestly frustrated since the game doesn't seem to favor stealth but charging into the enemy ranks with your guns ablaze. The Na'vi also suffer a bit from camera issues since the game seems to struggle to give you a good view of the action. Though, both factions suffer from a rather useless mini-map. The game is constantly rotating the mini-map to match the direction you are facing which makes keeping track of where you need to go rather difficult. You'll often times have to stop the game by hitting the select button to pull up the main map. This constantly breaks up the gameplay, but even with this map you may find it difficult to navigate in certain areas because of the narrow hallways and multiple heights within the stage which all have to be registered on the same map. The game just has no concept of displaying areas like a floor map in Zelda and ends up suffering because of it. The game also has a few other annoyances like areas you can fall into, but can't escape from. And, a few glitches. I remember being in the first area of the game that you arrive at and watching a NPC in a forward walking animation, but was moving backwards. ========= Graphics ========= Graphically the game is stunning, but these powerful visuals can lead to a few issues like stuff popping up in the distance as you get closer. ========= Sound ========= The sound is alright, but the voice acting is rather uninspired, like the voice actors just weren't interested in this project and wanted to go home. It makes the story feel like it lacks any sense of passion or urgency. ========= Lasting Appeal ========= The game does offer the option of choosing your side meaning you can either choose to fight alongside the native Na'vi or aid the RDA in raiding the moon of Pandora for resources. I'd just prefer to play this game once and forget about it though. ========= Scores ========= Story: 3 Gameplay: 6 Graphics: 9 Sound: 5 Lasting Appeal: 4 Overall: 5.14
