Awesome Visual Novel/Otome gameI managed to get a collector's edition from the Aksys store, and it was so worth it. I started learning Japanese specifically so that I could read/play these games, because this genre of games were almost non-existent here in the US. I'm so glad Aksys, IdeaFactory, etc, started translating them for the US market.
If you like dating sims, you'll love this game. The stories are so expansive, and there are different endings to get for each character path.
They remind me of the old "choose your own adventure" books at first. As others have stated, this is a visual NOVEL. You read the game, and make text choices to end up with each different character and ending. It's a lot of reading. There's no hack-and-slash, or fighting monsters in a battle mode... just text and great music/graohics.

Visual NovelFirst of all, this game is a visual navel: it's gameplay is reading. If you don't like reading it isn't for you. It's also a reverse harem dating sim. The protagonist is a female and the choices you make decide which character she ends up with. If you know what you're getting into the game is very good and exactly what is promises to be. The story is extremely good and the characters are well written and enjoyable. It' follows the history of the shinsengumi but has a supernatural flair.

Japanese Otome GameI'm so happy that Hakuoki has been translated into English! Otome, or Japanese dating sims (for girls), are practically nonexistent outside of Japan so having at least this one is a blessing. It is a lot of reading, these games are also known as visual novels, but the story is beautiful. There are different sides to the story, which is unveiled by which male you chose to pursue romantically and depending on what actions you chose to do, you can end up with either a "good ending" or a "bad ending" to the game. I love this game and I hope people can give it a try!
