Great in Graphics, Poor in GameplayAs a long time fan of the Silent Hunter series, I'm thrilled with this installment's new freedom to move around inside of your submarine without restriction. The improvements to the appearance of explosions and other audio cues is great. Also to note the new campaign objectives. Previously, the game had you navigate out to a randomly assigned nautical grid and occupy it (searching if your not lazy) for 24 hours. This lead to great repetition and a general lack of something to do frequently. Now the objectives are more broadly stated, such as 'Sink x number of tons in shipping along the English Coast'. Not only is this a welcome change of pace, but really makes the game feel more authentic. And now the not so great about this game. The biggest beef I have with it is the lack of control you have in comparison to earlier titles. The game requires you to speak directly to each officer in charge of different departments in order to issue maneuvers and other orders in a faulty attempt at realism (in real life the captain did not need to frantically run around his boat like a chicken with it's head cut off to issue orders, there were speaking pipes and good old fashion shouting for that sort of thing). This can become an extreme liability in time sensitive operations, such as an emergency dive and evade from a charging destroyer. Also, they've almost completely removed manual ship maneuvering which makes it extremely difficult to control your boat (such as the inability to dictate degree headings or specific motions of the rudder quickly, or even see the position of the rudder). The only way to perform steering operations is to hit the sift then right or left arrow buttons, which puts the rudder full port or starboard which makes maneuvering tricky. Also as a detriment to game play is the new moral system, which requires you to speak to every possible crewman and go though repetitive pre-canned speech routines constantly. Also unlike the earlier titles, you can only sail in 3 boats in a limited period of time in the war, which really strangles the amount of fun you can have with the genre in my opinion. In the end, it's staying on my hard drive and i'm sure I'll find ways to have fun with it, but I feel that if you need to heavily mod a game to make it fully enjoyable, you can't give it very high marks at all.
