Veteran of the original. Its good BECAUSE it is the original, but the graphics need to be better optimized for the switch system, it lags and stutters a LOT. The original game ran at 60fps, but even in docked mode, this remake can barely manage 30 outside of very small areas like the goo lagoon cave, boss arenas, or the very far back left side of jellyfish frock when you turn the camera away from the level and toward the background. Some kind of texture slider would be optimal, hell, add in an option that changes the game to use all the old graphics, that'd be nice The new animations are spastic and seem to go outside of hit boxes sometimes. Lastly: combat & challenge, I can run through the entire original game and avoid damage in about 4/5 places, I know they buffed a lot of enemy speeds and attack frequencies, but the janky frame rate and hit boxes make the otherwise improved combat seem unfinished at best, not a whole lot is noteworthy. Platforming, however, is something else entirely. Something about the new graphics engine completely distorts your current visual position (fancy way of me complaining "I THOUGHT I WAS ABOVE THE PLATFORM") The jankiness also seems into some of the platforming as well. The downtown bikini bottom rooftops are the worst offender. Falling off at any point causes the hand to drag you out of bounds, but in this area in particular, you fall so far down so fast that the split second that the hand is visible, the screen almost cuts to black, completely negating the hand animation. It looks bad. Adding to this, the Texas swingers cause Sandy's double jump animation to not play, she just bounces up in her regular falling position, it looks awful, not to mention the fact that the physics and controls on the swingers feel like a small black hole, sucking you in and violently jerking you around. The spongeball physics make zero sense, and anytime you get off a slide by riding off the edge, you will drop straight down with zero forward momentum, like you hit an invisible wall.
This honest to god feels like an open beta, not a full product. I absolutely love the original with all my heart, if I really wanted to take a portable version of this with me, I would seriously fork over a hundred dollars for someone to create a handheld raspberry pi for me. If you had the game on gamecube like I did, and you're a nintendo freak, don't bother with the switch version unless you are VERY patient, and subscribe hard to the 'graphics aren't everything' motto.
Also they didn't NEED to redo the soundtrack, but if they did, and they did a good job, I would immediately re-write my entire review with five stars and jokingly treat it as though it was a music album.
