I love the Disgaea series. I got into this entry about a year after its initial release on the PS2. Since then, the series has grown and evolved, bringing in new ideas and streamlining older ones. Unfortunately, all these improvements make the original title feel very dated.
To be fair, nothing about this game doesn't work. It's a very solid foundation for an incredible series. Disgaea 1 Complete does an amazing job at taking your free time and destroying it. The game has so much depth that a player can drop dozens of hours into the game without even looking at the story. One example is the Item World, which gives EVERY SINGLE ITEM its own inner arena, which lets you exponentially increase the item's power and capabilities, among other things. You can do all that and more to truly make the experience your own.
However, the series has come so far that going back to the first title almost feels like a chore. So many things like wealth distribution or experience gaining or movement options or character creation have all been streamlined to a degree that make this game really show its age. Even the Item World is implemented far better in newer Disgaea titles. None of it is bad or broken in any way; especially in how how well the humor holds up. It's just better to spend the extra $10 on Disgaea 5 Complete.
