SNK's weapon-based fighter, Samurai Showdown (aka Samurai Spirits in Japan), hasn't aged well over the years. The first five games included in this collection look and sound REALLY dated, and the controls are unforgiving compared to more recent 2D fighters. The saving grace here is "Samurai Showdown 6", which successfully modernizes the series. The graphics have been touched up, there's over 40 characters, combos feel much more fluid, and the music / sound effects are no longer muffled. The sixth entry, although a bit late, easily gives "Street Fighter 3: Third Strike" a run for it's money as top 2D fighter. Yes, the English translation is completely horrid--I can hardly understand the skill list instructions, let alone make sense of the character banter--but the gameplay is the real meat here. If you love 2D fighting games, you owe it to yourself to pick up "Samurai Showdown Anthology"...just don't expect to get much out of games 1-5, save for nostalgia.
