With Harvest Moon Island of Happiness, Natsume tries many new and interesting mechanics to the simple and beloved series, however new ideas aren't always good ideas. The game does have much more story than most Harvest Moon games. Most games are just "Ok here's your farm. Make it amazing!" but in Island of Happiness, you are one among many passengers on a boat sailing to find a place to settle into a new life in the country when a violent storm destroys the boat and washes you and the others onto shore. After finding and refurbishing abandoned houses, you and the others decide to settle on the small island. The story may sound interesting but the game itself is practically broken! First of all, nothing about this game looks good. The terrible graphics are just so hard to overlook. I've played through years of Harvest Moon DS and loved it. The controls felt so easy, you would move with the D-Pad, interact with A, and while there always the optional touch-screen commands, the buttons felt so convenient. In Island of Happiness, EVERYTHING you do is with the touch screen. It's very difficult to move in one direction, much less farm or talk to people! I couldn't count the number of times I picked up things I don't want and threw away things I did! From watering crops to feeding animals to shopping, the touch-screen makes everything a hassle. Even if you can tackle these awful controls and get past the outdated looks, you'll notice this game is incredibly slow-moving. Every flipping day for a week the old man came to my house to basically if I knew how to use a touch-screen. You have a map so you can see every single interesting area is inaccessible, and it will remain that way until you can pull thousands of gold from somewhere! Good luck considering the touch-screen makes farming next to impossible. It takes forever for more people to come and settle on the island so you can actually buy things like animals and house improvements. I could go on all day about why this game is so flawed, but the main thing is that it just doesn't feel like Harvest Moon. Natsume was definitely going for something innovative in Island of Happiness, but most of the new ideas are annoying or flat-out boring, and don't stick to the traditional guidelines that have made the past Harvest Moon games so amazing. For example, seriously? A hunger meter? It is so difficult to recuperate stamina by finding enough wild plants just to be able to water a few crops, what makes you think players will enjoy having another meter to babysit? The point is, there is just absolutely no reason to buy this game. If you're a die-hard Harvest Moon fan and have to know what happens, check out some videos of it, and make sure this is the game you want. I recommend you spend your hard-earned money on a game like Harvest Moon DS or DS Cute. It's up to you, but trust me, this game is not worth it...
