Features

Nintendo 3DS includes two screens. The bottom touch screen makes use of a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit itself. The top screen displays 3D visuals to the naked eye. Looking at the screen is like peering through a window into a world where characters and objects have true depth. The system also has a 3D Depth Slider that lets players select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be ratcheted up to the highest level, scaled back to a more moderate setting or even turned off completely, depending on the preference of the user.

In addition to the familiar + Control Pad and button controls found on previous Nintendo hand-helds, Nintendo 3DS now also includes a Circle Pad, which provides a full 360 degrees of direction, giving it the freedom and precision needed to play games in 3D worlds. It brings the same degree of responsiveness that gamers enjoyed when Nintendo introduced an analog control stick to navigate Mario™ through Super Mario 64™ on the Nintendo 64™ system.

  • 3D screen, enabling 3D view without the need for special glasses and the ability to adjust or turn off 3D effect with the 3D Depth Slider.
  • Stereo cameras that enable users to take 3D photos that can be viewed instantly on the 3D screen.
  • New input interfaces including the Circle Pad, motion sensor, gyro sensor
  • SpotPass, a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS detect wireless hotspots or wireless LAN access points and obtain information, game data, free software, videos and so on for players even when the system is in sleep mode.*
  • StreetPass, a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS exchange data automatically with other Nintendo 3DS systems within range, even in sleep mode once this feature is activated by the user. Data for multiple games can be exchanged simultaneously.
  • Convenient features that users can access without stopping game play such as the HOME menu, Internet Brower, Notifications, etc.
  • Plenty of built-in software such as the Nintendo 3DS Camera, Nintendo 3DS Sound, Mii Maker, StreetPass, Mii Plaza, AR Games, Activity Log, Face Raiders, etc.
  • Nintendo eShop where users can view trailers, software rankings and purchase software.
  • System Transfer which enable users to transfer already purchased software from one Nintendo 3DS system to another. DSiWare purchased for the Nintendo DSi or the Nintendo DSi XL can also be transferred into a Nintendo 3DS system.**
  • Compatibility functions where both new software designed for Nintendo 3DS and most software for the Nintendo DS family of systems can be played.
  • Parental Controls which enable parents to restrict game content by ratings as well as use of specific wireless connectivity, 3D functionality, etc.***

Among the best systems of this generation

Having never played the PS Vita, I am in no place to declare whether or not it is as good as, or better than, the 3DS. However, it’s hard to see any other handheld coming close to the 3DS. The console’s hardware design is almost perfect. The main buttons (A, B, X, Y) are receptive and “click” nicely when pressed, and the circle pad is a great addition, helping to push the 3DS into the current generation with better controlled gaming. The option to turn off the 3D effect was a smart addition, benefiting the console’s battery life and the user’s eyes. That isn’t to say the 3D effect is bad, though. Rather, it is a genuinely enjoyable mechanic that improves many games. The only real flaw in the 3DS’s physical interface is the select, home, and start button design. These buttons are less receptive to touch and require a harder press. Also, this version’s sleek black coloring looks good, though its glossy texture readily displays fingerprints. The 3DS’s greatest strength is its video game library. Titles like Super Mario 3D Land, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Pokémon X & Y are sure to impress fans. And those are only the games I’ve tried. I’m confident titles like Mario Kart 7, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Bravely Default are excellent games. The 3DS is highly portable (assuming you’ve got reasonably sized pockets), and though the battery life is OK, it helps to turn on power saver mode and set the screen brightness low when one can. I’m glad the 3DS comes with included applications and mini-games; that was one of my favorite things about the DSi. However, the quality of these apps was a bit disappointing. Sure, the 3DS can take nifty 3D pictures, but I felt like the content would have been much better had they simply included Flipnote Studio, the deceptively fun animation-maker from the DSi. I’m aware that a 3DS version has been released in Japan, but the rest of us are still without its addictive greatness. However, that isn’t to say the 3DS’s included content is bad. The Mii Maker and eShop are cool, though I can’t really access the latter because my 3DS refuses to connect to the Internet. I don’t know if that’s my fault or Nintendo’s, though. The integration of StreetPass and SpotPass into multiple games is nifty, and though I’m not sure every stranger passing by has a 3DS, it’s a nice thought. All in all, the 3DS (in any of its colors) is a great handheld console, with its great library putting it a notch above the rest in its market.

ive had my black 3DS for about 3 years now i can safely say that this is the best Nintendo handheld to date the game library is a monster with all sorts of amazing content and its held up well against an era of smartphone and tablet users the only complaint i have is that after a while the R and L buttons can go out if you use them to much, if thats the case than you may want to get an XL
