Civilization VII features three distinct eras including: The age of Antiquity, the Age of Discovery and the Modern age. Each age comes with its own set of playable civilizations as well as gameplay mechanics.
Changes in Era
This time around instead of playing a single civilization each era allows the evolution of your empire through selecting a new civilization for each new era, each with its on historical challenges for that era. Below are some changes that come with each Era: Civilizations: Civilizations are unique to each Era, and come equipped with Unique Skills, Units, Principles, Buildings, and/or Upgrades. Resources: Each Era contains a set of Resources obtainable on the map that were available during that time period. Some Resources span multiple Eras, while others are exclusive to a single Era. Principles and Technologies: The Ages determine which Principles and Technologies can be investigated. Buildings and Units: The types of Units, Buildings, and Wonders available are determined by the Era. Independent powers: Independent Powers are minor factions on the map that can be interacted with. Game systems: Certain gameplay systems are only available during certain Eras, ensuring that each Era is unique and exciting. Playable Map Area: Eras determine the overall size and scope of the playable map, which expands as the player transitions into new Eras.
Era Progress
Each Era progress is tracked over the course of your campaign, through different actions like taking a turn, eliminating rival civs, and other in-game actions add progress to your Era Progress meter. When filled the Era ends and all players enter an era Transition, which brings a new civilization, new resources and new discoveries to make.
