These nutrients, in a wet and dirty environment, allow microbes to successfully colonize the plastic surface. Once microbes reach a certain colonization threshold, they secrete acids that break down the polymer chain. The carbon chain is fully consumed. The byproducts of this biodegradation process when aerobic are water, carbon dioxide and biomass.
