After a couple of years without a new mainline entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise, Ubisoft is bringing the franchise back into the limelight with a dramatic new take on its long-running fiction.
As the name implies, Origins transports players back to the earliest days of the conflict between the Templars and Assassins, and in the process, lets us explore Ancient Egypt and all its strange wonders. Control and guide Bayek, a stoic yet powerful figure working to protect his people and confront an emerging threat, and see how the centuries-long conflict first began.
While an initial glimpse at gameplay recalls the action of previous Assassin's Creed games, a few minutes with a controller in-hand reveals big changes in store. Leveling and tiered weapons help the game feel more like a role-playing game than ever before. The combat system has been wholly redesigned, demanding a new approach to melee and ranged engagements. And other series staples have seen dramatic reinvention; eagle vision now lets you see from the view of an actual eagle.
Early demos of Assassin's Creed: Origins reveal a game with big ambitions, a massive open world, and a willingness to make significant alterations to an established formula. We'll learn whether those bets pay off when Ubisoft releases the game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 27.
