Product Details:

On the forsaken remains that were once the proud planet called Astara, the villagers of Rockhaven lead difficult but peaceful lives, until the day the Shadowraith, "Dark Yabu," and his minions sweep down from the sky. With terrible ferocity and ruthless efficiency they descend upon the townsfolk, enslaving them to work deep in the caves that surround their village. The Dark Yabu kills the grandfather of the young Vexx, who manages to slip quietly aboard the enemy's windship. There, locked deep within Yabu's sanctum, lie the last pair of Astani Battlegauntlets. The gloves leap from their chest onto Vexx's outstretched hands, bonding to his arms and giving him special powers. Vexx embarks upon a heroic quest through volcanic islands, desert temples, frozen citadels, and giant's castles, to confront Dark Yabu high atop the Landspire, save his people, and avenge the death of his grandfather.

Eking out a meager existence on the forsaken remains that were once the proud planet called Astara, the villagers of Rockhaven had led difficult but peaceful lives. Those lives became both more difficult and considerably less peaceful the day the Shadowraith, "Dark Yabu", and his minions swept down upon the villagers from the sky. With terrible ferocity and ruthless efficiency they fell upon the tired townsfolk, whose resolve crumbled like the shattered Astaran remains around them.

All but one.

Vexx, young enough not to have been beaten down by the toil of his people's existence, yet old enough to defy his grandfather's resignation to give into Dark Yabu, rushed to fight the invaders. It didn't matter. Alone, he simply didn't have the strength to face Yabu and his guards and he quickly found himself captured with the others and put to work deep in the caves that surrounded their village. As the townsfolk labored, mining for Yabu only knew what, they suffered the indignity of the whip and the curses of Yabu's guards.

Driven to exhaustion, many collapsed under the weight of their burdens. When Vexx's grandfather succumbed to the arduous pace of the work, collapsing to his knees and clutching at his chest, Vexx had had enough. With Yabu callously gloating over his grandfathers huddled frame, Vexx launched himself recklessly at the fiend but was quickly overmatched. Knowing the thread of his life had nearly run out, grandfather summoned what was left of his flagging strength and, with sudden and surprising ferocity, hurled himself at Yabu and distracting him momentarily. As he continued his hopeless assault on the cackling wraith, he cried out for Vexx to run... to fight another day.

Now, understanding the depths of Dark Yabu's power, Vexx was caught, torn between his loyalty to his grandfather and his growing horror as Yabu's magic held the old one helpless. With slow and callous deliberateness, Yabu used his dark magic to extinguish the last flame of the old man's life. With the only bond holding him back now gone, Vexx vanished into the twisting warren of tunnels, vowing to find justice.

That night, as search parties scoured the caves of the island for him, Vexx slipped quietly aboard Dark Yabu's windship, hoping to find something he could use in the fight against the Shadowraith and his followers. His hopes were not in vain. Locked deep within Yabu's sanctum laid the last pair of Astani Battlegauntlets. The artifact of a thousand years gone civilization, the gauntlets were the only things to ever have caused pain to Yabu so he kept them under lock and key, away from the prying eyes (and fingers) of others. But he needn't have bothered had he? The only livingmember of the ancient race of the Astani was Reia, and she kept herself locked away in the ("for now", he thought) safety of that accursed chamber high atop the Landspire. He'd find a way past the wards on the chamber doors soon enough, he thought. Once the villagers had collected enough of the remaining orbs she'd have no choice but to come out of hiding and try to stop him, and when she did... he let the happy thought trail off.

Yabu would have been considerably less pleased if he'd known that, even now, light was flaring out of a chest deep within the bowels of his ship, beckoning to Vexx to discover its source. Drawn to the chest Vexx found himself reaching out for the latch only to be startled when it flew open of its own accord, its cover bursting upward and knocking him to the floor. As he collected himself, Vexx was stunned to see a pair of shining gloves hanging oddly in the beam of light spilling from the chest. As he reached tentatively for them he found himself yanking his hands away, startled as the openings in the gauntlets swung hungrily around to meet him. With greater resolve, he reached forthem again and screamed as the ancient artifacts leapt onto his outstretched hands and began the bonding process that would prevent them from ever being taken off while their wearer was alive. Pain coursed down Vexx's arms, causing blazing points of light to appear before his vision.

Outside, Yabu had just finished checking with his guards when a flicker caught the corner of his dark slit of an eye. Whirling, realization dawned on him as lightning, growing fiercer by the moment, engulfed his windship. As the wind picked up, the light welled through the now bulging cracks in the ship, growing ever brighter; he looked on and cursed. Suddenly, all went completely still for the count of two heartbeats as a tension hung in the air and the moment seemed to strain and twist. And then the windship exploded. Blasting Yabu back and tossing his guardsaway like the detritus he considered them to be, the splintered remains of the windship and the precious cargo of energy orbs were hurled to thefar corners of Astara.

As the wind died down and his pawns gathered themselves, Yabu approached the groaning figure of Vexx, now scorched and lying nearly insensible in the midst of a still smoldering crater. With thunder still echoing from the shattered crags around them, Yabu cursed Vexx and left him to die in that forsaken place. The last words Vexx heard as Yabu walked away with his guards were "Gather the villagers, we'll have to take them to the Landspire now."

Vexx awoke with a start. The now duller, but still pulsing pain in his hands reminding him that it hadn't been merely a horrible nightmare, but also thathe was still alive. The face that stared down at him was not one he had ever seen before. "Ah, so ye're awake are ya? That's good, I thought I'd lost yeh for sure," the craggy face said. Needing to know where he was,and where Dark Yabu had gone, Vexx immediately asked, to which the answer was the hut of the hermit "Darby" and that Yabu had in fact flown off to the Landspire. Recalling in his fading moments that those were the last words he heard Yabu utter, Vexx immediately scrambled to his feet saying that hehad to get there.

Darby smiled patiently and brought Vexx outside where the old hermit pointed out that there was no way to get to the top of the Landspire except by Windship. Vexx wouldn't accept this and, after some thought, Darby conceded there may be one other way. If Vexx were to use the shimmering orbs that dot the Astaran landscape to return power to the ancient Astani Riftgate system, he would find that one of the portals would bring him to the Landspire. "That's it!"thought Vexx... not only would he beable to find and deal with Yabu now that he had the ancient Battlegauntlets of the Astani, but he could put the very energy orbs Dark Yabu had been hoarding to good use at the sametime! With that Vexx set off on his quest, with the aid of Darby, to inevitably confront Dark Yabu high atop the Landspire in the center of the world and see that justice was served.
