R: Racing Evolution
Nice Try Namco
Though Namco did try making an ideal racer after long being in the loop of "Ridge Racer" I really had high hope for this title seeing I have a good rep with the company's games. However Namco's efforts for "R: Racing Evolution" is mediocre to poor. One the xbox you'd expect some pretty good graphics, but if I can compare this to something on my old Nintendo 64, well, that's saying alot. It dose have some nice car reflections I will admit. You'll notice if your on the edge of the turn or have a car on your tail, the reflections are there of those objects. The racing courses are lame. I don't know if Namco did it's research, but having add ons on courses already known isn't much of a bad thing. Overall, the selection is limited, and there are very few places to race at. On the back of the cover Namco likes to gloat on it's "Realistic Handling" when I've driven, enough games and in everyday life to know this comes nowhere close. I don't know why, but if I'm driving and making a slight turn, my car defiantly wont drift to the side that much. The off roading rally is pathetic. Not only is it very weak in every realistic way, but drifting into corners is totally inaccurate. If you buy this one for the story line, don't waste your time. I'm not saying it is, but I believe this game is aimed for the female audience. The story line sucks, it's corny, and it's not a story to get into. Movies are short, and when they do play, they're.....blah. It's just sad. The most annoying part is the crew chief. Now I know how much I enjoy it in other games, but hearing the other drivers sound like "oh man, 76 passed me!" over and over makes you think it's a kiddy game. What's even sadder is if your driving a car with the number 12 or any other car really, the other drivers STILL yell "76!" Ummm, lazy? That means, yup, you guessed it, the crew chief says alot of the same things over and over. The car selection is pretty sad too, I don't have a ton of cars to choose from, and what I do get to choose, isn't a very great choice. I do like Lancers and Skylines, but how sad is it when those are the only two GOOD cars? Overall Namco's Techno Japanese Racer is just sad. If your looking for good racing games, stick with "Forza" and "Ralli Sport" Two titles you wont be disappointed with and will keep R: Racing Evolution eating dust.
