Score three for Pandemic Studios
i will admit, when i bought this game i didn't have alot of hope. i saw that it was an open world game my heart sunk because i figured it would be a cheap GTA rip off. well, i am pleased to tell you it isn't! alright, let the review begin with the bad: the map is big, but there isn't a heck of a lot to do in it. the voice acting for the characters like the Chinese General is EXTREMELY STEREOTYPICAL! also, you can't kill civilians. The good: the gameplay is easily the best part, now, you can drive around like in GTA, but the scale of destruction is much larger. almost anything, including buildings and BRIDGES are destructable! the story, while not the best of all open world games, brings a nice sense of urgency to what you are doing. there is some sharp, yet subtle humor in the script, which is also very good. the music is fantastic, composed by Michael Giacchino and Chris Tilton, with some loud Asian drumming and a haunting carol of voices really amplify the experience to new levels! the graphics are the weakest part of the good but they are still good for the time the game was released, just don't expect to be blown away by them. so overall, Mercenaries is a fantastic XBOX game and an awesome thrill ride that will leave you satisfied with fiery explosive action from beginning to end. i highly recommend it as a gift for a newly turned thirteen year old and definitely for anyone!

u have to play to belive
all I can say is WOW but actually theres more to be said this is awsome in every sence of the word it is such a free play there are hundreds of ways to accomplish each mission there is very littel structure which i like the most. meaning you have control of what you want to do and where you want to go.there is a huge range of assets, weapon and vehicles everything from civilan cars and military jeeps to tanks and helicopters theres no end to your weapons inventory and the vast factions you get to deal with not to mention the totally destructable enviroment man what a stress reliver this game is a great way to relive the days tension. I can't wait to play part 2 but I have to get the right system first but until then this is the number one game.

Up there with the Zeldas
If you have read any of my reviews you know I am very particular about my games. If the graphics are bad, forget it. If the interface is weird, chuck it. If the storyline is trash, trash it. You would also know that I have much praise to extend to the Zeldas. Now, to say the Mercenaries is 'up there' with the Zelda games is THE best compliment I could give a game. Just so you know, I don't praise games lightly. Mercenaries is the culmination of Xbox games. It is the perfect mix of game-play, storyline, graphics, music, weapons, vehicles... everything. First thing that impressed me about this game... It takes a historical event, and instead of just leaving it at that, they create a whole new element... The Deck of 52, your main objective (next to, of course, General Song, who is the top card, the Ace of Spades). Which brings me to the next thing about this game that is so good. The length is, frankly, amazing. The Deck of 52 is 52 people who are the key to the North Korean war effort, and you have to kill most of them to finish the game. Not all, but most. And for every card, there is at least a mission you have to complete to get that card. Sounds hard, right? Actually, the game in and of itself is not very hard. But the shear size of the place and the amount of cards, enemies, and contracts still makes it one of the longest games ever. Legend of Zeldas will get you about 40 hours of gameplay the first time, maybe 10 or 15 the next time. Mercenaries gives you about 40 hours of gameplay the first, second, and thirds times around! Maybe 30 by the fourth time. And believe me, you will want to play this game over and over. Another great feature about this game is that there is so much variety. You have 3 characters you can pick from, each with unique, if subtle pros and cons. I like jacob, he has the most defense and health, even though it is hard to realize that he does. Also, the way you finish the game can be different each time. The first time you could do the bare minimum (get all the aces, don't worry about cards that don't help you get the aces) and the second you could do as much as you can (do as many missions you can, do all the timed bonuses, and get every single card). You could try to have good relations with every nation the first time around, and the next time you could just do whatever it takes to get your targets. Are you interested yet? The graphics aren't the best, but Pandemic and Lucas Arts to a great job of making you feel like you are in a war zone, North Korea. The hazy sky, the fires buring by the roads, and Chinese, Mafia, North Korean, and Ally vehicles zipping all over the roads makes it feel like a warzone. One thing is that the people run kind of wierd, hunched over, and the jumps are pathetically unreal. But still. The music is great, it compliments the game very well, even though there are about 5 soundtracks in all. The gunfire sounds are really realistic. One of the most satisfying things in the WHOLE game is to blow up a huge, anti-air vehicle with an RPG. The combined sound of the money (you get money every time you destroy major NK artillery, vehicle, what have you) and the great explosion is priceless. Heh heh. Normally, I hate shooters. They confine you to certain missions, and the only thing you have to do is to blast the heads off somethings and you're done... BO-RING. Mercenaries is one of the few great shooters still around for an RPG lover. LucasArts makes great RPGs, like KOTOR, to I knew I was in for a treat when i bought this game. Try it out1 You'll be so glad you did.

The 2nd Best Game ever
Like the headline says, in my opinion, this is the 2nd best game ever (The 1st best is Halo, 3rd best is Call of Duty). It has a great storyline, great graphics, and it has a pretty long length. The Challenge is pretty good, but you still have a lot of health. It usally takes 2, not 1, RPG shots to kill you. If a car runs over you, you can die. How the health system works is: You start out with a hundred health, then when you lose health and it gets down to less than 20, the screen turns red, time slows down, your adrenaline kicks in, and heals you back up to 20 (but doesn't keep healing you). All the health pickups in the game restore you to full health. The graphics are excellent, and the landscape is very realistic. The people in the game look realistic, but Infantry from the same faction all look alike. But civilans look different than each other. The game has a long length, but it depends on how many contracts you go on. Because there are so many ways to beat the game, it has excellent replay value. Another thing that ads to the replay value is that athere are 3 different Mercs you can play as. This is what they storyline is: In the very near futre, the Leader of North Korea, General Choi Kim, wanted to reunite Korea into one nation again. If North Korea made they're military less oposing, South Korea agreed to give North Korea money. They would dismantle the DMZ's mines and bring the two nations together. But on the night when the treaty is being singed, General Kim's son, General Song, staged a coup. He killed many leaders in the North and South Korean government that night, even his own father. Then, he siezed control of North Korea, and cut off comunication with the outside world. But then, the Austrailian Navy discovered that the North Koreans were manufacturing nuclear weapons, and selling them to terrorists. A war had been started. The Allied Nations decide to make a most wanted list of 52 of the most wanted North Korean officials. The different factions in the game are: The Allied Nations, who want to Verify the deck of 52 and destroy Song's Nuclear Arsenal, The South Koreans, who want to stop North Korea from hurting they're country, the Russian Mafia, a crime syndicate who doesn't care who wins the war but wants to make some money off of it, the Chinese, who want to absorb Korea into they're contry when the war is over, and the North Koreans, who wnat to luanch Nuclear weapons at the United States. You take the role of a Mercenary, working for a company called exOps. The Controls were great, easy to get used to. You can carry two weapons at a time. The interface was good, and you had a PDA that you could use in the game to see a map of the area or call in airstrikes, or other things. The sound was great, the gun noises were very realistic. Now, to wrap it up: I think this is a great game, with a great storyline and graphics. That's why I gave it 10 out of 10.

Best game to get.
I reccomend this game to any and all players. It is long and challenging. This game has a good variety of guns and vehicles. the health system only healing you to 1/5 health makes it have a decent challenge. As far as the sandbox goes this is a top game for it. Also you have a huge variety of missiles that you have an opportunity to use. This game is the best shooter game by far it blows the call of duty series easy because you get to choose what missions you do first instead of do them in a specific order that the game creators give you. My favorite thing about this game is the fuel-air bomb because i remember the first time i used it. the thing sucked their scout cars back and blew them away leaving no enemies to face me. This is the best weapon by far to use other than the bunker buster and the cheat weapons crate. Also if you do use the cheat weapons crate id say be very careful with them or just use infinate health and blow everything out of your way.

This game is for extreme fun-seekers who are looking for something that kills time.
Shame I don't own this game, because this game is off the hook! This game is an addictive and fun third-person shooter, with realistic graphics, correct difficulty and is a blast to play! The story begins with your character walking around in a plane grabbing his/her equipment, then he/she gets in a jeep then falls out the plane via a parachute. Then you're trying to avoid the North Korean's fire at you. The enemies are simple to beat with your starting weapons. So do the good guys a favor and kill those North Koreans, then you advance to the UN base. Once you arrive, you need to accept the mission. Then, you need to go to the area that one of the game's 52 bosses, killing enemies in the process. Then when you arrive at the boss, the game will show you what to do: Take the boss in alive. Once you do that, throw a smoke grenade at the ground and the helicopter will pick him up. Then you need to return to the base where you started the mission. You will get money that you can use later in the game, and new areas open up. Then finish the South Korean mission, then the Mafia mission, then finally, the Chinese mission, and most of the areas are open to you to explore. You can do other missions that you can do in the UN, South K., the Mafia, and the Chinese respectively. This game has all the toys you can find in games that are similar, like Grand Theft Auto (Without all the criminal stuff) and Call of Duty (Without the Co-op mode). All and all, this is a fantastic game for those looking for fun time-killers.

Great game, few faults
Starting out fresh with this game can be really frustrating, with the (too) tight handling of the vehicles especially. Getting used to the weapon system takes a little time also, and the Merchant of Destruction can be a bit confusing at times (don't believe it's even open at the beginning of the game), but after playing it for a couple of hours, and you start unlocking some of the better vehicles and weapon systems (love the satellite-guided bombs), Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction picks up the ball and runs with it.Whether you enjoy just causing Grand Theft Auto-like destruction, or if you're one who likes doing missions and running through the storyline, this game won't disappoint, as long as you stick with it through the somewhat-sluggish beginning. Trust me, the first time you drop the Fuel-Air Bomb, or jump off the roof of a building onto a helicopter, or hijack a tank (I like the female character's animation the best), you'll be grateful you sat through it.
