Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects is an interesting anomaly. It's a marvel game that isn't based on a movie. That in and of itself is amazing, seemingly the only time we get super hero games nowadays is if they are tied in to a movie or successful cartoon series. I have found this trend quite disturbing for some time now, not only because I am a fan of comic books, but because most super heroes seem like a perfect fit for the video game world. So it is very refreshing to see a publisher take such a "risk". It's obvious that the developer spent some time on the game, it's not quite the level of shovelware that usually comes from this situation. The graphics are fairly impressive even for today. While very dark and brooding, the whole game has a gritty almost noir'ish style that I personally find quite appealing. As far as the sound goes, there are maybe 3 or 4 voice samples for each character, which is disappointing, especially considering that the full roster itself is on the slim side. Speaking of which, I do applaud EA for the roster of Marvel Heroes they did choose. Ironman, Daredevil and Venom in particular are some of my favorites. But others are a bit weird.....Storm and Elektra, really? What happened to Captain America or The Hulk? They could have at least added a few more unlockable costumes for each of the fighters. And on to the Imperfects, the plethora of "heroes" made up by EA to fight the marvel roster and flesh out the story. While it was an admirable try by EA to dream these characters up and try to make them compelling, I just couldn't shake the feeling that it would be more fun to fight against characters that had already been established in the source material. Not that the EA characters were that bad, just a bit bland in comparison to the Marvel Heroes. As for the gameplay, it is pretty straight forward. There are a few notable character specific attacks for each fighter, but it mainly boils down to button mashing, as these things tend to do. So all in all, I would say it's an above average game, but just barely. 7 out of 10. Still, how much enjoyment you get out of it depends a great deal on your love for Marvel comics. If you're not a fan, this game is definitely not for you.
