Test Chamber - Watch Darth Vader Force Choke Us In The Star Wars Battlefront Beta

by Andrew Reiner

Star Wars fans likely have two dates memorized: November 17, the launch of Star Wars Battlefront, and December 18, the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. The countdown to both launches is made a little less painful today with the launch of the Star Wars Battlefront beta on PlayStation 4 and PC. We took a brief look at the two modes players can test out at this early time, and walked away mighty impressed by the classic trilogy vibe, and flow of combat.

We kick off our look with an 8 vs. 8 match on the planet Sullust. Tim Turi and I pass the controller on every death, and end up doing fairly well in this match. The next match we dive into is Walker Assault, Star Wars Battlefront's large 40-player mode with vehicle integration. We suit up as the Rebels and show off many of Battlefront's unique features, all while dying over and over again. Darth Vader even makes an unexpected appearance at one of our spawn points.

Battlefront is undeniably gorgeous. Whether you're running through the snowy trenches of Hoth or exploring the rocky canyons of Sullust, the details and lighting effects are among the most impressive I've witnessed on consoles.

Prior to jumping into the beta, I had my concerns about the experience DICE would deliver, but the gunplay and character navigation feel updated and smooth, whether you're using the first- or third-person views through the three modes in the beta.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Left me wanting more First off, I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. I've seen every movie multiple times, I collected all the toys as a kid and I've played my fair share of Star Wars games (Battlefront 2 being my favorite). That being said, I had high expectations of this game when it came out, as all of us did I'm sure. In some ways, it delivers and in some ways it doesn't. THE GOOD: The graphics. The graphics in this game are absolutely beautiful! DICE completely nailed all of the environments that you will be in. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be on the front lines of the Battle of Hoth, this is the closest you’re going to get short of living it. The character and hero models are also spot on, and everything looks very authentic and loyal to the franchise. The weapons, although very limited at launch, are very fun to use and there is a sense of balance involved with them, as every weapon has its strengths and weaknesses. And to top it all off, Battlefront also includes some very fun multiplayer action. THE BAD: No campaign. I repeat, no campaign. Granted, there have been games that have been launched without a dedicated single player campaign (Titanfall, Destiny), but Star Wars is very narrative heavy, and the game just feels empty without a dedicated solo campaign you can connect to. There WAS also a criminal lack of content here at launch. The new DLCs (that you must buy) adds some new maps, characters and weapons to the mix and have helped with that, but even in its current form, the game seems light on content. And the fact that you MUST pay to get the most out of this title seems kind of cheap on EA’s part and SCREAMS cash-in. The multiplayer is also very unbalanced at points, with the edge in almost every mode go to the empire. My last gripe is the voice acting. With a franchise as big as Star Wars, it is inexcusable that DICE or EA couldn’t spring for some more convincing voice acting for the hero characters, as they sound nothing like they do in the game. Overall, Battlefront is a decent game. It’s not amazing, but it certainly isn’t terrible either. The DLC content has improved the game quite a bit, and the graphics in this title are simply too beautiful to miss out on. Hopefully the next Battlefront, they fix these things. For $60, the game was not worth it. At the current pre-owned price though, it is well worth the purchase. Pick it up if you can, it’s a good time!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great game I bought this game about 6 months ago. I love Star Wars and shooter games and I absolutely love this game. One downside though is it takes up a lot of space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This game is really fun I play it all the time! I think that battlefront is a great game. EA did a amazing job on gameplay and graphics. Also they really did well on the DLC's.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just call it Star Wars: Battlefield. This Star Wars: Battlefront reboot by DICE resembles their Battlefield, but lacks its depth. Strategy and content are sorely missing in this FPS which feels like it was made for Star Wars fans that don't like FPS games. The customization, maps and modes of Battlefield have been somewhat carried over to this game, but also streamlined to a tee. There are no solider classes, squads or weapon customization in Battlefront. However, DICE has perfected the look, sound and overall feel of the Star Wars battle scenes. They've also included a few cooperative modes including Survival maps which are fun. Unfortunately (like many recent shooters), there is no campaign mode featured in the game. Ultimately, this is a shooter for fans of Star Wars first and FPS fans second. It isn't very deep, but the presentation is top notch and the gameplay can make for a fun diversion. 7.2 out of 10.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lacks Gameplay/Replayability Gamplay - There is a lack of singleplayer and gamemodes Graphics - The graphics are very good compared to the best games this year Sound - Uses most of the original Star Wars music. Nothing special. Lasting Appeal - All though this game is fun, it lacks a singleplayer so it might draw fans away.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from star wars battlefrontish i was extremely excited when this game came out, i remember battlefront 2 was the best game i had through school. this game is a cheap knock off to those games, first off its STAR wars and there are NO SPACE BATTLES. i understand they wanted to make the view more tasteful than just space but its a space based franchise... the thing i loved most about battlefront 2 was the ship vs ship fights when 2 cruisers had an outright brawl in space. second there was absolutely zero single player campaign or story modes, which is highly distasteful for a true star wars fan. all in all if you had never watched or played and star wars games it would probably be fun but because im such a fan of the franchise it disappointed heavily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Star Wars To be honest, this game exceeded my expectations. When I played the EA Access trial I had fun. Yet with the DLC and updates to the game for example new skins for maps like Hoth Luke, Han, and Leia are all great additions and is much better than running around with Luke from Episode 6 on Hoth which is from Episode 5. Overall if you just like Star Wars I reccomend this game. Great visuals and sound. Yet people who are hardcore FPS players mgith dominate over you untill people who only play this game because its Star Wars get more used to the FPS genre and controls of the game. 10/10
