NBA 2K16

A Thundering Slam Dunk
by Matt Bertz

Continue to push the boundaries of sports games with ambitious innovations in gameplay and modes

From the realistic player models to the first-class broadcast presentation, this is the best-looking sports game ever made

The acting in MyCareer is dramatically improved, and newcomer Greg Anthony slides between commentators Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg without a hitch

The already stellar gameplay gets better with new dedicated passing buttons and more size-ups

With several modes worth playing, NBA 2K16 offers the most value you'll find in a sports game

Letting a championship slip out of your grasp can be a harrowing experience for a franchise. Some teams never get over the hump, fading back into the pack never to emerge as a contender again. Others use the disappointment as motivation to improve and prepare for a second run. Visual Concepts found itself in this position after server woes sullied the launch of the otherwise impressive NBA 2K15. Using the offseason to retool, the series has emerged with its best effort in years.

NBA 2K16 is the virtual equivalent of a player who can play all five positions on the court. The already strong gameplay receives a boost this year from a redesigned post game that lets you back down players with a press of the left trigger, a welcome return to days of old. Passing also received an overhaul, giving you three face buttons for lobs, bounce passes, and the traditional toss. Double tapping these buttons gives you quick access to alley-oops and flashy passes as well. Having these options at your fingertips is great for specific situations, but expect to still use the icon-based passing because directional passing can occasionally misread your intent and send a ball across the court instead of into the post.

You will need all the tools at your disposal to keep up with the impressive A.I. in NBA 2K16, which is the best I've seen in a sports game to date. Each team employs different strategies, making every game feel different. Teams run play sets to get their best players involved, attack quickly in transition, and react to your tactics on the fly. This dynamic gameplay translates across NBA 2K16's strong collection of game modes.

For the last few years the destination mode for NBA 2K games has been MyCareer, which puts you in the shoes of an up-and-coming baller breaking into the NBA. This year 2K handed the storytelling duties to famed director Spike Lee, who takes the experience in a decidedly cinematic direction. Users still create their own player, but Lee is the true owner of this story. Player agency means little to Lee - no matter what race or creed you create for your MyPlayer, you play the role of "Frequency Vibrations," a high school hoops sensation born and raised in Harlem. I embraced this narrative direction since this is the story Lee wanted to tell, but the dissonance of seeing my pasty white player interacting with his black twin sister ultimately made me go recreate a different character so the cutscenes wouldn't be so jarring.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 2K16 Coulda Been Alot Better It's a nice upgrade as Im coming from playing 2k on my Xbox 360. The soundtrack is dope not as dope as 2K12's but a huge improvement from 2K13, 2K14 & 2K15. Spike Lee killed MyCareer he made it into He's Got Game 2. I mean your player plays 3 high school games & 4 college games is great and all but only playing 8 games in your rookie season?! Nah Im not with that. Whenever I played previous versions of MyCareer my player would play all 82 games, I would be an All Star and win Rookie of the Year. I do like the off days where I can either practice,do endorsements, hang with the fans or NBA players. MyCareer aint all that bad. Now the gameplay 2K changes their controls every year I don't know why but they do. Just stop 2K leave the controls alone. Now the graphics are pretty realistic especially the tattoo's superb job on the graphics. 2K servers lag as usual same old same old. I do hope 2K really makes 2K17 a home run and improve the game and GET NEW SERVERS!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh Spike goes all in with ANOTHER fail.... And 2K lets him mess up a good thing. If only you could choose to by pass the beginning of story mode, it would be a touch better.... But not by much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All of the fun of the NBA in your hand It had been a while since I purchased an NBA 2K game (2k11 being my last one) and I decided 2016 was time to get the newest game and it did not disappoint. The graphics are great. I play on the Suns so Tyson Chandler looks and acts exactly as he does when watching a live game on TV it's awesome. Your players are a bit slow on D. Maybe it takes more practice but I seem to be allowing players to drive past me too easily. The Spike Lee joint aspect of the game is really cool, love the story. But I found it odd how my agent kept telling me I'm going to be drafted 1st overall but I get picked 8th overall to the Pistons. But whatever. I play MyLeague more than I intend to play MyCareer. Getting your created player into your MyLeague team took a bit of research on the Internet. So let me break it down for you, you create your player, then you creat draft class, hit RB and add your player to the draft class, then you creat a roster and I believe hit RB and import draft class to roster, then when you start a MyLeague campaign you would allow custom rosters then you choose your roster you created and voila. So hope that helps. When in doubt just keep hitting RB or LB to scroll through rosters until you get to a list of your created players. Also YT in your best friend. All in all it's a super fun game and has tons of replayability, I strongly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from WELL worth your money I have been playing this game since release, mostly in my career. My PG is up to 93 overall and I am in my fifth season. I have played a couple of hundred games and really enjoy this game. It is probably the best sports game on the market right now (FIFA 16 being 1A), and I do not understand why this game has a 6 overall (which is why I felt compelled to provide a counter-review). I have played pro-am and it is fun. My GM is awesome, Season mode is awesome. Rosters are full of classic teams and FIBA teams, and the stick work is awesome. I have been a consistent purchaser of this series for a few years now, and this is the best of 'em so far. The presentation, the "tv" feel of it all.... ..if you are on the fence or haven't bought this game yet... you are missing out!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beware This game is good for much older players. Definitely over the age of 18. My son received this and really enjoys playing my career. However there is a point in the game where his best friend gets killed in the game???! we were shocked and my son has cried for days. Beware if you have younger players.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This game is horrible This game is horrible waste of time marcell kept cheating and my friend marcus talked trash in the back because it was his game. This game doesnt compare to the ps4 version of 2k16, the 2k16 xbox one version lags much more than the ps4. im going to show them how invincible i am in the ps4 version and theyre going to regret buying the xboxone version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressed with the Gameplay & Ambition NBA 2k16 has come a long, long way. I was so impressed with the next-gen consoles and the graphics to the gameplay to the sounds and feel of being on the court. The myCareer mode I have to say is a great addition with the cut scenes, and the mid-game interviews all lends itself to pulling you into 2ks world of basketball. I get excited every time I get my guy on the court and modes like myPark brings it all together. Great additions to fans reacting to lose balls in crowd. I cant say enough about this game
