Dead Rising 4

Home For The Holidays
by Jeff Cork
Concept:

Take Frank West back to where the series' outbreak all started - and kill a few thousand zombies along the way

Graphics:

In spite of a few visual hiccups (and underneath all the gore), it's a nice-looking game

Sound:

Frank's new voice actor nails his performance, but the standout work is from whoever created the demented new holiday songs

Playability:

Combat is simple and satisfying, and the streamlined systems continue to benefit the player

Entertainment:

This is the Dead Rising game that fans of freeform exploration and mayhem wanted from the original. Clock-watchers need not apply

Replay:

If misery factories like The Walking Dead have taught us anything, it's that people are crappy and that they're the real threats in a zombie-infested world. That may be, but some of us would rather experience the end of days like The Last Man on Earth, using the apocalypse as an excuse to ride a tricycle around while wearing a tuxedo jacket and snow pants. Dead Rising has straddled the line between horror and humor since its inception, and that hasn't changed with the fourth entry - but it's not shambling in the footsteps of what's come before. Even though we're back in Willamette with Frank West, Capcom Vancouver has infused the series with fresh ideas and some of the best action that it's had in a decade.

Frank can't seem to stay out of the game, in more ways than one. Capcom has introduced new heroes in the Dead Rising series with each numbered entry, but they don't have the same staying power as the war photographer. Like a lot of people, I get a kick out of the lovable doofus. Sure, his jokes are enough to make dads nod appreciatively, but there's something compelling about a hero that's always just on the edge of failure at any given moment. His return to the scene of the first game is fitting, though he can explore far beyond the mall's confines this time around.

I've personally been less interested in Dead Rising's storylines than in its settings and characters, and Dead Rising 4 hasn't changed my opinion. Yet another conspiracy needs investigating, with double crosses and intrigue. Why have the zombies returned, even though the infection was supposed to have been stopped with the Zombrex drug? Is the military involved? Why on earth would you live in Willamette, anyway? Frank gets pulled into the mystery by one of his photography students, and before long his instincts kick back in. Players who have been around for the long haul may recognize a few names here and there, but you can easily start the series here and not feel completely lost.

Even if the campaign's conspiracy feels a little rote, Willamette is the best playground that's been offered yet. It has everything you'd expect to find in a small town, from quirky shops to hardware store and homes - and the all-new Willamette Memorial Megaplex mall. Best of all, it's easy to navigate. Unlike Dead Rising 3's network of blocked-off freeways, the roads are clear - zombie hordes notwithstanding - and you can circle the map without leaving your car. You want to get out to explore the various shops and interior spaces, though. Dozens of weapon blueprints and other collectibles are hidden within the well-detailed environments, and you can do so at your leisure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes someone finally did it! Someone finally made the perfect zombie game. There are a lot of reviews saying this game is bad but I actually like it. Everyone says Frank is funny and I kind of agree he makes me laugh all the time. Unlike a lot of zombie games you don't have to find a workbench to craft weapons. you can't repair weapons but finding weapons is so easy it's not even an issue and if all else fails you can use your fists. It's not incredibly efficient but it gets the job done. The weapons you can create are so amazing and awesome. They can be electric fire or acid and have such amazing impacts on the enemies. Whenever you save someone's life from a group of zombies they reward you so much. They might give you weapons or sell you things including vehicles outfits and weapons. Talk about gratitude. The upgrades are pretty useful and I enjoy them and they make the game Fun. People say the story is bad but I personally kind of like it. I won't spoil too much but I will say that Frank starts off being kind of a douche but later he becomes a decent man. Regardless of how bad anyone thinks this game is you cannot deny it is going to be hard to find a zombie game more fun than this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Out of all the disappointments this year....... Here are MY top reasons why this game titled, "Dead Rising 4" is just......DOO DOO! 1. It is filled with glitches and bugs. (I fell through the world.....typical next gen gaming) 2. It freezes at random. (the checkpoints are not well coded) 3. Long load times. 4. DLC/Season pass lackluster content (enough said) 5. The new Frank is a hollow creep with no personality. 6. Less weapons/vehicles then 3. (unless you get the season pass) 7. The story is terrible and boring. (Even with the cameos) 8. No time limit. (At least add it as an option) 9. Its too easy. 10. It is a short game. 11. You can beat the maniacs in less than 1 minute. 12. Frame rate drops 13. Poor animation. 14. Terrible textures. 15. Lack of immersion. 16. Side missions are dull. 17. Zombie A.I is torture to sit through. (So stupid) 18. Too easy to level up. 19. Escort missions are gone. 20. The ending is an insult because the real one is DLC. 21. Everyone in the game sucks except for Hammon and Paulina. (Great voice acting) 22. The jokes are stale like Duke Nukem Forever. (sorry about the reminder) 23. The game designers lied. 24. The exo suit is a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! 25. The world is NOT big. 26. Low pre order sales. 27. Photo limit?? 28. Boss battles are disappointing. 29. The paid for reviewers are lying. 30. The fans are ruining the series. Other than that....have a Merry Christmas everyone on Earth!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from the worst one ever there are 7 story missions and 4 multiplayer missions. the game lasted me about a week before i beat it and the new gameplay makes it too easy to beat. The multiplayer co-op is basically just an arcade for killing zombies there are no real missions for multiplying but also the map is small for both the story and multiplayer. there isn't much free roaming around. this game should have been a DLC it isn't really a full game unlike the others the story and multiplayer was better but this is honestly the worst game for the series

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay, Dead Rising 3 was way better Co-op Campaign is gone. Graphics are good. Basically a game you beat, and then never return to it again. I loved Dead Rising 1. 2, and 3. And I was so hyped for this game. But overall I am disappointed with Capcom.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Spoiler In this Reveiw be advised! the game ends in a horrible and I mean horrible way frank DIES at the end and apparently from what I've heard (and I don't know if this is true) but for a different ending you have to buy dlc for a different ending .... honestly if the game had multiply endings like the other 3 previous games or ended in a decent way i would recommend the game to others but after realizing you have to PAY for a semi decent ending( remember i don't know if you actually have to buy dlc) i would only recommend this game if you are willing to pay for the in game dlc .If no then I would not recommend this game to you( and the game only has 7 hours of gameplay)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dead rising is going back to the roots please read This review will be based on the ign video to help returning gamers get an idea on where the franchise is going and maybe pull some new gamers into the franchise. So, the developers this time around wanted to go back to where it all began and put frank back in welemonte. As I saw in some reviews here. The game mechanics are slightly different this time around. The health system is different and frank is able to regenerate health and there is no block health anymore.just like in dead rising 3, you can make combo weapons wherever you are Which is something personal I liked since I didn't like having to run to a place where you could make combo weapons in dead rising 2. You can still use food but, there are no combo food and food only boosts health regeneration faster. The original voice actor for frank is not In this game. The humor is still there like it always had in the franchise. There is no time limit in this game unlike the other games and will only be added through as dlc . If you are pondering about getting the season pass, don't be discourage to get it if you are assuming that is one of the major dlc you get. I'm certain there are other things that will be coming with that dlc. Don't quote me on that though. Item management is better in my opinion now because inventory has been separated into 3 categories now plus food has its own separate 4th category. The first slot is for range weapons another is for melee weapons. I do not remember what the third slot is. Each category has 4 slots to start off with and increases to 8. Another interesting twist to the game is capcom has now created 2 new zombie types. So besides the traditional zombies you see in the game, you will see another zombie that is fast but dumb like the slow zombies and can turn survivors instantly into zombies and then another zombie that is smart. As far as I know right now, there is no co-op campaign but 4 player multiplayer which I believe is like the dlc for dead rising 3 which was 4 player co-op . There are still vehicle combos just like In Dead rising 3. The graphics look great and the zombie killing is still fun just like I remember. So if your returning gamer from the series and unsure about getting it because of the changes, my advise is to give this game a chance and have a look at the ign gameplay video on you tube. That way you have an idea on what the game will look like and new gamers welcome as well. Hope this helps people who are unsure about the game
