Dark Souls III

Familiar But Fascinating Fantasy
by Daniel Tack

Seek out the Lords of Cinder and return them to their thrones to restore flame to a decaying world of ash

Beautiful and varied environments, including my personal favorite from the entire franchise (including Bloodborne)

Intense and orchestral boss tunes, chilling screams, and terrifying enemies crawling, laughing, and clanking around shape the world around you

This is a challenging game compared to many other available titles on the market. Though the difficulty curve begins mild, be ready for that to change as you progress

An excellent entry in the fantasy series featuring unique environments, bosses, and a massive wealth of secrets and surprises

Moderately High

After a divisive second installment in the Souls series, many questions are swirling around Dark Souls III. Will players continue to be surprised as they move through beautiful environments that are as imaginative as they are deadly, or will franchise fatigue set in? Can the massive, grotesque, and intimidating bosses continue to drive fear into the hearts of players and inspire them to overcome seemingly impossible challenges through perseverance and sheer force of will? Can From Software do it again? The answer is yes, From Software and Hidetaka Miyazaki have created yet another masterful and challenging action RPG experience.

Combat depends greatly on the playstyle you choose. Whether you're playing with a heavy shield designed to take blows or dashing about and rolling, knowing your opponent's abilities and moves is as important as knowing your own. Deliberate, precise attacks - coupled with judicious defense - are the only way to victory. Failure to abide by these rules, like recklessly charging around as you would in a typical action game, invariably ends in a crushing defeat that sends you back to a bonfire - minus your payload of collected souls. Death remains a valuable learning experience for new players and veterans alike. New to Dark Souls III are weapon arts or skills, and while many weapons share the same abilities, some weapons have unique skills that are a lot of fun to play with. They don't change the core game formula much, but offer a nice new accent of flavor to combat, and are especially interesting with weapon types that didn't get as much love in prior Souls games, like bows.

Hundreds of weapons, armors, accessories, and spells are available, so you have the tools to get the job done regardless of your playstyle. You can be an archer, caster, shielded tank, two-handed brute, dual-wielding mercenary, speedy Bloodborne-style hunter (complete with items tailored to and referencing the archetype), and more. Respeccing your stat points is available from one of the NPCs you meet about a quarter through the game, so don't worry too much about making a mistake. This is a great boon if you accidentally mess up a few stat points or completely change your loadout after finding heavy armor or that perfect weapon you always wanted later on in the game.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Masochistic Fun I heard much about this game and eventually I caved and bought it 3 days ago. It is also important to note that I had NEVER PLAYED A DARK SOULS GAME BEFORE. Now starting out in the third installment in the series while not playing the predcessors may be unwise, but I thought it was worth it, and worth it it was. While the first day of playing the game was spent with frustration and agonizing backtracking to get my souls and to repeat the same process over and over again to beat the first boss, I realized the next day after playing some more what the beautiful gem is that this game has in its core. The game is about learning patterns and learning how to take advantage of these patterns to advance in the game. After realizing that, my approach to all of the battles in the game had been, study, attempt, fail, repeat process. The game makes you learn, and if you refuse to learn and adapt, the game will destroy you over and over again. For the Xbox One, I have found that the game does not run as smooth as it could, but it has not affected me to the point of frustration. To sum it up, the game is frustrating and many things could happen that could have you raging left and right, however, it is a learning and adapting experience, and I think along with the great visuals, music, and drama, this game delivers a pretty package.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great game but definetly not for everyone. Let me first off say if you don't have patience or you rage easily, this is not the game for you. For those who love challenges this could be the game for you. I personally have not played any of the Souls games so I really didn't know what the feel of the game would be like. I will say that I expected the game to be a good game but I didn't think it would be as good as it actually is. I felt that the gameplay and the sound of this game is amazing, but the only con would be the graphics but graphic don't bother me that much. Overall if you are a hardcore gamer looking for a challenge this is the game for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game is not only glorious challenge, but art. In truth, any one can play Dank Souls, even casual gamers. However, if the challenge presented to you is still something unachievable and you give up before the race is won, then you seriously need to rethink your life. Dark Souls is far from an impossible game. But if you cant find joy in vengefully destroying the demon that has slaughtered you ten times in a row, then it's probably not the game for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Game Yeah dark souls is a hard game to play but in my own opinion I say that's what makes the pretty fun. but I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a anger problem XD

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A game that makes hardcore rpg's unique. DONT LISTEN TO THE LAST REVIEW. Keep your courage, fighting spirit at 10, and take some time. IT is amazing game to play and this is the 1st dark souls you can have friends help you with the area and boss fight. By setting unique password together. Their is A LOT of youtube video on walk through to tips on defeating boss or finding cool weapons or spells. There is some out there on making your life difficult but, it's like any other online games. The story is hard to explain and little but that's not what the game is about. Bosses fight are awesome and have different styles at combat. KEEP COOL AND ALWAYS PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES. Prepare to die.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OHY!!! This game is impossible to play because it is just way,way too hard for me. I do not want to play a game to get frustrated and this game was frustrating for me. I could not even beat the first boss after trying almost 100 times. I respect the great graphics and audio. I do feel the control is faulty. It was hard for me to pinpoint enemies when fighting. I had to press down on the stick and it just did not feel comfortable or accurate doing this. Even if this was not the case, the game is just way to difficult for me. Mad respect for those who can lick this game. I thought Dark Souls 1&2 was hard as heck but this one is way harder. I do respect the Dark Souls series but for me, this is way out of my league and I believe it would be for most gamers. I returned my copy to Gamestop with my tail between my legs ;). Good luck with this one. I was relieved to return mine.
