Gears Of War 4

Back To Square One
by Andrew Reiner
Concept:

New developer. New heroes. New enemies. The same Gears of War

Graphics:

Heightened weather effects and destruction produce a continual stream of awesome visuals to soak in. The new enemy types are also beautifully animated. The game even offers enhancements when viewed on a 4K TV

Sound:

The "dude-bro" dialogue is subdued and replaced by legitimately humorous banter. The soundtrack is once again thumping, and the satisfying guitar chord is back to signify the conclusion of each combat encounter

Playability:

Seek cover, pop up, and shoot. Gears of War's combat hasn't changed, but the toys you can play with pack more of a punch - which is needed, given how aggressive the enemies are

Entertainment:

The campaign is too familiar at times, but the gameplay is top notch. All multiplayer modes showcase high levels of depth and reasons to come back

Replay:

Gears of War 4 is every bit as enjoyable as the series' past iterations, but isn't the fresh start you might think it is.

The fourth wall is nearly broken in Gears of War 4's opening moments when a news reporter looks into the camera, and says "We're back." This dialogue is meant to elicit excitement from fans, but is somewhat of a misleading message, since Gears of War 4 is developed by a new studio, introduces new heroes, a new threat, new weapons, and has consistently been pitched as a "new saga."

Before developer The Coalition shows us how different its vision is,Gears of War 4 begins with a clever playable prologue that walks us through the key battles that shaped Sera and the series.

Through this tightly scripted introduction, The Coalition does a fantastic job of giving players a true sense of closure while establishing the need for the story to head in a different direction. Set 25 years after the Imulsion Countermeasure (which destroyed all of the Locust and Lambent nests), we meet new protagonists JD Fenix, Kait Diaz, and Del Walker on a sunny and colorful hillside. The series' trademark "destroyed beauty" approach to art design is nowhere to be found; it's just beautiful. The sequence even concludes with the trio stopping to witness a butterfly being born from its cocoon. The takeaway from this moment is that something ugly can eventually become beautiful and dynamic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Represents perfectly. This console and game pad represent the Gears of War franchise perfectly because of the art work, audio and details. If you are a Gears of War fanatic like me and want the S console then this is a must buy. I have no gripes. I have the console standing vertically and it looks better to me in this position.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Love It But... I love this console but i've had it for about 4+ weeks and now when i turn on the Xbox i noticed that the startup sound is louder and sound a bit distorted which is really annoying. But the console it's self looks great and is one of my favorite consoles ever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great looking and performance but a few hiccups The 2tb gears of war system has awesome memory. It also looks great. Using it with a Kinect has been a challenge. 1st it doesn't have a port and you need a adapter (purchased separately). 2nd, Cortana has difficulty or doesn't understand the power off command. It asks if you want your xbox to sleep.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly beautiful Let me just say that this console is beautiful! The detail on this console, controller, and even the box amazes me! This is def worth the money. Only down side is not having the Kinect plug on the slim models but the adapter doesn't bother me. The game is amazing and the story is just as good as the older ones. A+ for the coalition and Microsoft!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal Probably the best decision I've made with gamestop. The box and controller itself are beautiful. The 2tb hard drive, plus the game, season pass, and extra packages? $450 is a fantastic deal. If you're thinking of buying it,, get it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just buy it - you won't be sorry So, if you are a Gears fan here is the TL;DR version. Just buy it. For everyone else, just buy it, but here is why. It is actually a very good value for someone looking for a Xbox One S and wants the GoW 4 game. Consider that for $450, you get a 2 TB xbox ($399), and GoW 4 Ultimate ($99), and an exclusive look to both the console and controller (put your own value on that).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful console Microsoft really went the extra mile on this gears of war console,it is beautiful, some reviews have said the xbox one slim was noisy, but it is far quieter than my halo xbox one,and way quieter than my ps4,and it runs cooler,so far I am happy with this console, the only gripe I have is the reason I ordered the console from gamestop was because it was supposed to include a physical copy of the gears of war 4 ultimate edition game,it did not,it came with a digital copy of the game,it took me 12 hours to download the game because my internet sucks,i hate digital download games

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Console I just got this console yesterday and even though that I'm still figuring out on how it works and still have some installments to do, this is an amazing console that I'd ever seen in my life. The design in amazing, the color on the entire console looks awesome. Everything about this console is outstanding. I wasn't excepting to get such a thing but since I had the money, due that I have a job, I went in for it and so far, it's starting to become something I can get fond of. You can play your 360 games onto it, but you have to install them. To me, the main reason to even get an Xbox One S is to be able to play my 360 games onto it but I do plan on playing the Gears of War 4 game onto once I get done installing it. From what I've heard, the game is amazing and I hope it's good as people say it is. Also, the console itself can make sounds when you turn it up, eject a game, and even when you turn it off and I find that to be cool. This my FIRST Xbox One S console and from what they say, Xbox One S is the console we should've gotten three years ago but better late then never. I'm sure that once I get the hang of it, I'll grow fondly of it. If you ever want an Xbox One console, get the Xbox One S instead and you won't regret it.
