Shadows of the Damned
"MY NAME IS GARCIA HUTSPUR DEMON SCUM"
from shooting demons to killing flatulating horses its all in a days work for twisted game designer suda 51 and the original creator of the popular once survival horror genre shinji mikami, your gonna have one seriously demented game on your hands and shadows of the damned is no exception.
STORY: Shadows of the damned starts off similar too games like god of war and dantes inferno, you play as a raging heterosexual male antagonist hellbent on getting revenge on the demon who stole his wife. The whole game(with the exception to the prologue) takes place in the underworld a dimension sprawling with demonic creatures, from the grim sisters to giant cyclops monsters oh and floating eyeballs who take a dump at the very sight of Garcia and lets not forget Garcia's traveling companion Johnson, his pervertive skull demon buddy from the underworld A.K.A his gun, A.K.A. his motorcycle A.K.A. his torch and you get the drift. and your on a quest to save your smoking hot blonde girlfriend, formula sounds familiar don't it? well the formula may be as cliche as it gets but the game never lets up with information about the world itself like the incredibly demented children books you may find on your adventure. as a whole the story feels familiar but i dint come here for the story i came for the gunplay..
GAMEPLAY: shadows of the damned takes survival horror and adds a mix of suda and insanity with the shooting mechanics of resident evil and with it you get one of the most responsive fast paced shooting systems ive ever played. Garcia at first comes equipped with his big (CENSORED) and his torch which will be used throughout the dark and eerie underworld. throughout your adventures you will come across upgradable weaponry like the teether which is the automatic assault rifle when fully upgraded can shoot homing teeth at enemies(which becomes very handy later on).
at certain points in the game Garcia will be forced to enter this darkness realm which saps away at your spiritual life and eventually his health and its your job to follow the light and return to the underworld, but some sequences may force you to stay in the dark a little longer to solve a puzzle of sorts which are both fun and frustrating.. also like any previous games of suda 51 you will eventually come to a few mini games, now im quite fond of mini games but this games mini games were punishingly hard from tower defense game that involves Garcia to use his big (CENSORED) to blast giant cyclops away to an old fashioned antique side scroller that has the player float around shooting demons and collecting diamonds. other than that the gameplay was fun and also addictive.
SOUND: for a action horror game shadows of the damned did its job fairly well in the sound department all the guns sound good especially the teether which when fired you can here the delay in the teeth but for the horror side there arnet any creepy noises or screams that really added to the games atmosphere. the voice acting was great and quite funny as well.
MY EXPERIENCE: so here i am wandering the underworld collecting upgradable red gems and ammo when all of the sudden Garcia''s crazy girlfriend comes running after me at first it didn't phase me until she got super close to me and gave me a kiss of death. so i tried it again im running from Paula through a dark and eerie woods when out of nowhere this cabin in the woods pops up as much as i would looove to enter it i now have three demons including my crazy girlfriend Paula rampaging in back of me so here i am literally running in circles trying to shoot the zombies and trying to stay alive at the same time it seriously looked like a cartoon when out of nowhere Paula decides to switch it up and circles the opposite way. i was this close to getting killed but thankfully the games dodge mechanics saved me i did a 180 and killed the three demons with the skullcrusher then i hightailed it into the cabin which to my surprise felt and looked very familiar. so im walking in the cabin when i look over to the corner over at the floor to the basement a demon popped his head out which immediately told me this is a giant reference to Sam raimi's 1980's horror flick the evil dead lol.
THE VERDICT: if your in the mood for a great mentally unstable third person shooter then i would recommend giving this a rent since the game only offers you a full single player experience and pretty much nothing else, but then again if you enjoy the game there is a new game plus which carries over everything from previous playthroughs. but for me its definitely a keeper ive only done one playthrough but i already cant wait to dive back into the underworld and start slaying demon scum.
SHADOWS OF THE DAMNED 8/10 a truly demented experience
+Gameplay is fun and addictive
+great game design
-the story isn't original
-not much replay value
Good but gets repetitive
I got this game about a week ago and found that its rather repetitive. The upgrading system is alright because you have to buy or find gems to upgrade how well the weapon works. When you defeat a boss you receive a blue gem that will change the apperance and abilitys of a weapon. Certain levels are just annoying and sometimes you get overwhelmed by enemies which isn't bad but can get annoying.
One of the best third person shooters on the 360.The graphics make the new crysis game look shamed a true work of art this game is buy it, love it.
A good example of what video games should be
This game is simply amazing in just about every way imaginable. I hate how just about every game made these days are overused ideas that continue to ruin the video game industry, game by game. But this game, it breaks away from the age of overused, boring video games. This game has an amazing storyline that grasped me like a hook. I couldn't put that controller down until I reached that sweet credit screen. You also had to love how they somehow mixed a survival horror with bits of sick, edgy comedy that kept you rolling on the floor with laughter. I always chuckle a bit when Garcia yells "Taste my big b0ner!". I also couldn't help but to recognize the unique weapon selection that's available to you throughout the game. Those creepy bosses will also keep you white knuckled. Overall, 10/10.
This game is Awesome!
This game was great. It's a very straight forward game, besides collecting a few gems and a finding health there is not much searching for items, which I love, I hate wasting my time wondering around looking for items. I am casual gamer and by most accounts stink at video games, I didn't have too much trouble getting through this game, there were some hard Boss battles that I had to do over and over, but it never got to the point that I threw my hands up and gave up. I had alot of fun with this game, and am curretly on my 3rd play through. Because of my limited time to play games I hardly ever play through a game twice so for me the replay vaule was high. The music, sound, and voice acting was really good and did not clash or take away any from the game. I found the banter between Garcia (the hero) and Johnson ( the side kick) to be pretty funny and entertaining. I'm not one to really care about graphics, so can't really comment on that. I loved this game, and think everyone should play it!
I just got the game today. I am really just trying to find something to play while I wait for skyrim. The graphics are bearable, and the game play does seem a bit repetitive. But I can tell that this game will be short. I am not saying to buy this game or not. All I am saying is if you want a game that will keep you busy for a little while then go ahead rent or buy. The weapons are cool, and killing the demons are fun. But my opinion will have to be on both sides. I like the game and I don't. It's just not one of those games were you must buy it. Just try it out if you like it buy it if not return it.
it was not worth the money
one level just was so bad it was not wroth play it an more.
Playing an amazing movie
This is an amazing game. It has one of the best stories I've seen in a video game, ever. The script for the game could easily be a grindhouse movie, but instead of a movie it's you playing the main character through his journey into [the underworld] to save his girlfriend.(This game is a redemption for [bad] Dante's Inferno) The game play isn't revolutionary in any aspects, puzzles combat, etc. but the way they present it is absolutely amazing. Like a 10 hour movie though it doesn't have much replay value. It's more of a one and done deal, but your time with the game will not disappoint in the least. This game is definitely worth playing, but on terms of buying I don't see any need for owning this game. A rent is probably your best bet since the game is probably only taking you 10-12 hours to complete. Overall and absolutely amazing game that I would love to see more of in the future of games.
damned good game!!!!!!
great game and similar to silent hill in some ways, but it was a very short game.
BEST GAME EVER
Best game I ever have played. It's a game you should get in EVERY ONE SHOULD BUY THIS GAME.
