VEHICLE CLASSES

Tiers

In GRID 2 we're delighted to offer you the chance to drive some of the most exciting cars in the world, every one bursting with personality.

Our eclectic, handpicked vehicle selection is split into four tiers, grouping together contrasting classes of cars, each delivering a unique driving experience and requiring different skills to handle, but competing on an equal footing in the same events.

Tier One

We believe you shouldn't have to earn a license or grind your way through the tiers to drive something truly special, so from the first race we're putting you in some of the most spectacular vehicles from manufacturers that you might or might not have seen out on the roads.

These aspirational vehicles span five different, contrasting classes featuring stunning vehicles from all over the world - dive into Classic Muscle cars, Hot Hatches, contemporary Sport Coupes, turbo-charged Japanese speed machines and classic European Marques.

Examples:
  • BMW E30 M3 - A true car driver's car, this iconic example of German sports car engineering has a heritage in motorsport that is the envy of many manufacturers.
  • Subaru BRZ - Leading a new generation of sports car, the Subaru BRZ's punchy and taught handling combines with 200bhp to deliver a stunning drive that's rightly earned it numerous Car of the Year nominations.

Tier Two

You've earned your stripes, now it's time to push things forward.

Each of the vehicles in this class is a mouth-watering, shining example of automotive engineering excellence that'll put a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel.

Contemporary European Roadsters, Japanese Performance cars and race-ready road cars from only the best manufacturers from around the world, each present a distinct driving challenge where the rewards keep on coming.

Examples:
  • Ford Mustang Boss 302 - Feel the power. This race-bred road car packs nearly 450bhp under the hood to deliver the unmistakable racing experience you'd expect from an American icon with a motorsport heritage stretching back to the 1960s.
  • Nissan R34 Skyline Nismo Z-tune - The R34 Skyline was already a classic. Then the Nismo engineers took the car and made it the most powerful road-going R34 ever. Handmade, only 20 examples of this vehicle were ever built and GRID 2 gives you the chance to experience what it's like to drive "the mother of all GT-Rs".

Tier Three

It's time to drive the dream - awe-inspiring, head-turning cars rarely seen on public roads are what you'll find in tier three.

Weight and power combine for brutal speed on the edge-of-control in GRID 2's stunning GT class, perfect for blistering straight line speed and exhilarating to throw around corners.

The Lightweight class offers visceral thrills of a contrasting nature - feel exceptional acceleration and nuanced control as these low-profile rockets-on-wheels deliver mind-blowing power-to-weight ratio for undeniable excitement in each and every race.

Examples:
  • McLaren MP4-12C - A true technological masterpiece, including brake steer and a seamless shift gearbox, this entirely McLaren developed car's 600bhp turns anyone who gets behind the wheel into a racing driver in an instant.
  • Ariel Atom - The remarkable Atom's infinite grip and incredible acceleration weighs just over 600kg to make the ultimate track day car you can drive on the road.

Tier Four

Welcome to the best of the best. Only the most exclusive and exciting supercars sourced from across the world make the grade in GRID 2's tier four selection.

These outrageous vehicles demand you to find your limit, then go beyond it with top speeds in excess of 250mph.

No one said it'd be easy, and mastering these cars is a true challenge, but if you want the ultimate in racing rewards and to compete with the elite at the top level of GRID 2's new world of motorsport, tier four represents unadulterated driving nirvana.

Examples:
  • Koenigsegg Agera R - Extreme. It's the only word for this incredible car. Experience life at 273mph from this rear-wheeled beast which pumps out over 1000bhp, enabled by running this Koenigsegg on biofuel. Drive this and change the way you look at cars forever.
  • Pagani Huayra - Simply put, this is one of the most exclusive cars in the world. Named after the ancient South American god Huayra-tata, meaning "God of the Winds", its active aerodynamics react to changing conditions and its chassis is created from Carbotanium, a titanium and carbon weave which combines the best properties of each material. There's no other car quite like this - feel it for yourself.

Track Racing

For many, shaving seconds off every lap is the purest form of motorsport - it's about nailing each apex, carving your way through the pack and taking the chequered flag as you send the crowds in the grandstands wild.

Test yourself here - from the sheer thrill of racing open-wheeled speed machines to piloting turbo-charged street cars and more around legendary circuits with enviable heritage like Brands Hatch and contemporary classics like Red Bull Ring and Yas Marina.

We select only circuits bursting with personality that beg for repeat racing - then it's down to you.

Road Racing

There's nothing quite like the unchained feeling of hurtling full-throttle out on the open road and GRID 2's road racing events will take you to that special place again and again and again.

From insanely fast cliff-top roads to barrelling down the sides of spectacular mountains, these events demand that you become at one with the car, whatever lies ahead.

Whether you wrestle the car around each hairpin or prefer to pick the perfect line to glide through these stunning landscapes, performing under pressure when there's no safety net is what's required to conquer the competition.

THE LIGHTING

GRID was pretty, GRID 2 is taking things to another level. So today we asked Technical Art Director Jorge Hernández Soria and Associate Art Director Daniel Oxford to reveal how GRID 2 will put you in the race like never before.

How has the lighting technology improved from the original GRID?

Our lighting model evolves through the development of all of our racing titles, with each project highlighting specific, unique requirements that influence the lighting technology. GRID 2 has allowed us to concentrate on per-instance lightmaps, skymaps, real time shadows, improved layered fog and sky simulation; all of which combine to achieve a lighting direction that feels grounded in reality, and a huge step forward from the original game. The single biggest visual achievement would have to be the development of our spherical harmonics system, which gives us accurate lighting calculations based on the car position within its surroundings. This means the car looks and feels fully integrated into the scene - Jorge Hernández Soria (Technical Art Director).

What's the basic process for lighting an environment?

We begin by sourcing reference photography and imagery and use this to inspire and inform the base lighting. Once the sun position for the track is locked down, we then define the right colour and contrast values for the sun, sky, ambient and all scenery (physically) placed light sources and values. These values are then baked into the lightmaps, from where the terrain and buildings derive their detailed ambient and bounced light information. These lightmaps include shadows, which allows us to have seamless, consistent shadows across not only the track (as in DiRT3), but also the buildings.

The technology that really defines the visual style of the game is the post-process system. This is another element we've upgraded, with the inclusion of colour palettes facilitating the ability to change the look of the whole track instantly, whilst retaining the richness of the underlying lighting - similar to how you would grade film or photographic imagery. A simpler version of the colour palette system was utilised with great success in DiRT 3, but amongst other enhancement tweaks, we have improved them by including gradient maps in their creation process.

The application of these palettes is unlimited and can be easily shared between tracks to create a coherent look for the whole game - Jorge Hernández Soria (Technical Art Director).

The original GRID game was renowned for being very cinematic & immersive. How have these values been carried across to GRID2?

GRID was obviously ahead of the game when it came to the sheer drama and emotion evoked by the lighting and presentation of the race. We've ensured we retain the highly effective meta-real' look we pioneered in this genre, but cranked it up to the next level. Inspiration is drawn from the best Hollywood films, both in terms of cinematography styles and the pacing of the action.

The technology we utilise, as Jorge says, has advanced to the point where we can control the lighting and grading like a movie director - from unifying palettes to give each location a flavour to selecting hero' tones to exaggerate, enabling car liveries to standout for example - Daniel Oxford (Associate Art Director).

How does lighting influence the player's experience?

Having such a powerful suite of lighting controls means we can carefully light and grade each race and location. We can emphasise the underground, edgy flavour of early races by setting them in a dramatic sunset scenario. The presentation evolves with player progress, so when you move through the ranks, the lighting will reflect the more glitzy, professional nature of the action. By the time you get to the top level of your career, it will be full on prime time' - fully illuminated night racing tracks, with the highest end flood lighting setups and race day pyrotechnics - Daniel Oxford (Associate Art Director).

What will make this stand out from other Codemasters titles?

GRID 2 is the blockbuster, "Hollywood-movie" title amongst the Codemasters Racing portfolio - we are at the cutting edge of all the technological advancements made in the DiRT and F1 games and GRID 2 harnesses this power through the lens of an action film director. We're aiming at Total Race Day Immersion. It will be the most cinematic, intense, action packed game we've ever made, all centred on serving that core racing experience - if you've ever wanted to be a driving superstar, at the very pinnacle of the racing world, GRID 2 is the game that will take you there - Daniel Oxford (Associate Art Director).

HANDLING AND THE TRUEFEEL PROCESS

Since we've announced GRID 2 it's been great to speak more openly about its development. Many of the recurring questions we've had involve TrueFeel - our new handling model for GRID 2. I thought I'd take a little time out to explain why we think it's so important and how it will help make GRID 2 become one of the most immersive and rewarding racers... ever? Why not? We aim high.

What is TrueFeel?

TrueFeel is the result of our unique approach and process of vehicle handling development that we've developed for GRID 2. Within the Racing Studio we're nuts about cars and we really care about communicating the unique character of each of the amazing vehicles we have in the game to the player. We want you to understand how each car truly drives, moves on the track, carries/shifts its weight, when/how it breaks traction and ultimately how easy or tough it is to recover when things go wrong. These character traits (along with a multitude of other subtleties) represent the true spirit of each individual car. It's this spirit that we want to share with people who play GRID 2.

When we set out designing GRID 2, capturing a car's true personality for players was our goal. In order to achieve this we had to make a number of decisions. One of these was that GRID 2 should not feature any artificial assists. While our racing team have done fantastic work with assists for previous titles, ultimately having a system artificially braking or modulating your throttle input and potentially even turning into corners for you all detracts from the direct connection the player should have with their car. We want the player to feel everything the car is doing in order to fully understand how it reacts and adapt their behaviour accordingly. This way the player will truly understand the unique character of some of the greatest cars in existence. "Reflecting world class engineering" is a phrase we coined in the studio... some of the world's leading automotive engineers ploughed years of their lives into refining the handling models of many of our vehicles, it would be criminal not to accurately reflect these handling models in GRID 2.

You may be reading this thinking "well that's all well and good, but I didn't think GRID classed itself as a simulation title?" You'd be right; we don't class, and it never has been. This is where TrueFeel comes in. This process allows our handling team to develop each vehicle to retain the core handling characteristics and subtlties which define the real world car, and by allowing players to feel that connection, enable a spectrum of performance for a range of players. Novices will be able to get the car around the track, but experts will be able to take advantage of TrueFeel's depth to really push their car to the limit and dominate races.

Real-world drivers

When initially setting the car up from a purely "simulation" perspective we aim to involve drivers with real-world experience of the car. We've been lucky enough to work with some amazing drivers over the years, along with several manufacturers' in-house test drivers. These guys are invaluable when it comes to ensuring that the character of each vehicle is captured and reflected in-game.

Identification of defining characteristics

The handling team (working with real-world drivers where possible) will then identify the defining characteristics of each vehicle. These could be the way the car handles on corner entry, how it shifts its weight through bends, how traction is lost in various conditions and so on. Once identified, these characteristics must be maintained.

Feel

Once everybody is happy with the car from a simulation perspective the level of feel' is explored and iterated. Essentially, the handling team will assess any "blocking characteristics" that the vehicle may have, for example this could be excessive under-steer on corner entry leading to players repeatedly running wide or off-track. Elements of the vehicle setup will then be very carefully tweaked, rolling back the blocking characteristics to an acceptable level while ensuring that everything identified in step 2 is maintained. This is where the talent within our handling team really comes into play, coupled with the depth of our handling/physics systems - the team have in excess of 300 parameters to carefully balance here.

This approach doesn't mean one difficulty level nor dumbing down. It's about connection. When you connect with the car, you get the most out of it. Pushing yourself and the car becomes intuitive, keeping you in the moment. And it reflects reality - drive a monstrously powerful "over-steery" rear-wheel drive hyper-car in the same way you might a lesser powered, front-wheel drive road car and you will get your ass kicked. The diverse selection of cars necessarily demands a learning curve, so our vehicles are divided into a tier structure, becoming available to the player as they progress through the game (but that's for another article...).

Ultimately, we want players to truly experience and understand the defining characteristics of some of the greatest cars in the world - TrueFeel is how we're going to do that. - Toby Evan-Jones, Associate Producer

THE LIVEROUTES SYSTEM

One of the things we're very excited about with GRID 2 is our new LiveRoutes system, so we thought we'd look at the thinking behind it and what we believe makes it a game-changer. LiveRoutes is our new system which gives players unpredictable, dynamically changing routes through our city environments. It adds a new way to experience racing. You have to be on your game - you can't predict what's coming next, because we can't either.

We'll start at the beginning...

The original GRID has two key development ideals. Firstly, a push to over-deliver on the core racing experience; making the title all about the race - tension, moment-to-moment excitement, intuitive decision making and how the cars feel on track... The second ideal was innovation - that desire to do things that hadn't been done before. This gave us focus yet a lot of scope for new ideas. And those overarching ideals remain at the core of GRID 2.

LiveRoutes was a product of the latter aspiration to break new ground. Our game design and level design teams devised the system along with the support of a number of other teams within the studio as a way to provoke the player's driving instincts and produce unexpected gameplay scenarios which keep the action fresh.

The difference between racing and driving.

In a race, you generally have to have the basic criteria of a start and end point. Without those criteria, it's easy to find yourself drifting into the realms of just "driving", which is not what GRID 2 is about at all. However, we wanted to investigate how we make the race experience more variable. Open world games have many benefits; the sense of awe a player has when something happens they didn't expect, the variety of gameplay, finding new challenges , etc. However, retaining a clear focus for players is pivotal to racing - without that purpose, you're just driving around.

So we took some open-world sensibilities - near limitless possibilities and permeations - but framed them inside a system with clear goals. In simple terms, LiveRoutes gives players variation whilst retaining the competitive nature of getting somewhere faster than your competition.

How does it work? LiveRoutes dynamically streams in alternate sections of city tracks seamlessly. When LiveRoutes is running, the system selects which direction the track should go in at various junction points at random and on the fly - be it straight on, left or right. It does this a number of junction points ahead of the player. This means that the relevant crowd, barriers and race-day placement - grandstands, signage and so on - are all loaded into the environment seamlessly to suit the direction the race will then travel in.

A new way to play

We're devising a number of race types in GRID 2 which have had LiveRoutes specifically in mind. Players will get these in a mixture of scenarios - scattered throughout sections of the career mode and in custom race setups. The real beauty of the system is that we can do everything I've explained in the online modes. More to come on this another time...

The experience

The most important thing with LiveRoutes was to change the race experience. With LiveRoutes the focus is no longer to better yourself a lap at a time - that's something we serve up in our other modes. Instead, LiveRoutes challenges players to better their reaction times, driving skill and intuition. If you turn left on the same junction twice - who's telling what speed you'll be entering that corner the second time round - it could be 80mph as you come out of a tight chicane, or over 200mph as you fly into the corner from a flat out straight. The nuances of the challenge LiveRoutes poses are not quite infinite, but pretty close! We can't wait for you to experience it yourself. - Iain Smith (Producer)

US - CLUB INFO

The USA is home to some of the world's best Race Clubs. Two have emerged as candidates for Patrick Callahan's new racing series. Let's check them out.

New Union

An international crew come together in a club with all-American style, pushing their classic US Muscle cars to the absolute limits in whichever race they enter. Lead by American Harrison Carter in his Chevrolet Camaro SS 1970 and Mexican Jorge Espinosa in his Dodge Chaser RT, New Union Race Club are rightly feared and respected.

TransAmerica Pacers

These guys race one on one. Faceoff, as it's known, is racing stripped right down to the bare bones - two racers, one winner. The Pacers are fearless drivers who love their cars, regardless of where they're from - classic American, European and Japanese marques all sport the TransAmerica Pacers livery. Look out for Brazilian Bruno Silva who makes his Mercedes Benz 190e25 fly and Félix Wilson, the Canadian who drives his Nissan Fairlady 300 2x like he stole it (he didn't by the way - he won it fair and square in a pink slips race before he went legit). They'll push you. You're gonna have to push back.

US - LOCATIONS

California Coast

Speed down insanely fast and dangerous cliff-top roads against the stunning backdrop of the California coast. Prove yourself in heart-pounding point-to-point races in iconic American Muscle cars, from 70s legends to modern classics.

Chicago

Racing gets wild in the Windy City as you trade paint underneath the El train and weave between soaring skyscrapers. We're closing down huge sections of this town, creating circuits out of the city streets and flooding the stands with fans - it's an ideal stage for GRID 2's aggressive racing experience where each inch of asphalt must be fought for.

And more...
