Rated 0 out of 10 by MechaMessiah It's about time the western hemisphere got risque.
As someone who has NO knowledge on the language of Japanese, this game would have forced me to learn it so I could import it. There aren't enough games that come out stateside that push the envelope as to what is new, ingenious, or even over-the-top. This game appears to have encompassed all three, and I'm very happy to see it releasing very soon. Ignoring the hype about it being too hard, or sexually charged. Games that make us question our morals, or make us think about different ways to approach something as realistic as a relationship are new to the scene (and no, I don't count "Bioware Romances" or anything where relationships play backup to the overall story). Catherine should be, at the very least, a game worth checking out. Do I expect more from this genre in the future? No, I don't, but to get the chance to try something new that's not grown stale is more than enough for me.
Rated 10 out of 10 by Anaku Amazing game, you don't want to put it down
I first heard of this game from a friend around may and ever since then I was anxious to get it. When it finally came in I was ecstatic and I even got the delux edition.
The story line is top notch, it's got those moments that immerse you in the game and sometimes make it seem as if some of the things happening to Vincent happened to yourself. The only reason I didn't give the gameplay a 10 was because of the third level on the clocktower stage. I started playing on normal and did fine up until the third stage on the clocktower, which I looked up in a walkthrough, but the game isn't so difficult it's frustrating, you basically have unlimited lives if you get enough pillows.
I love this game, even though the two endings i've gotten so far are the bad ones, i'm playing it until I experience the whole thing.
Please get this game if you read this and enjoy a good story line.
Rated 0 out of 10 by TheChad This game is actually pretty unique
The game isnt going to be another lame anime game like some people may think, there really has never been a game quite like this to say the least. The game has two gameplay styles that you never see together, a social pick and choose style during the daytime (Picking Catherine or Katherine) and a ultra tough Qubert style puzzle platformer by night, with all the alternate endings and an online component for something other than a shooter this game deserves more than a simple look off because its anime, or because it isnt call of duty. Cannot wait till July 26th. Also, if you are interested at all in the game they have gameplay videos of the first 5 levels (nightime and daytime, so you can see how these mechanics flesh out) on youtube, a british dude narrates as he plays, its fabulous, please dont overlook a likely cult status game. Lets go Vincent!
Rated 10 out of 10 by Lavos99z I didn't expect it to be this good!
From my demo review, I thought it was going to be quite a bit harder than it was, but I was wrong! It was challenging, yes, but I had more determination and skill than I originally thought possible. I started on Easy, and am now working on Normal. I don't know if I want to try Hard, but it's up there. Anyways, this game is gorgeous in many ways! I love the cell shading graphics, the voice acting (other than etchy parts where the dialogue overlaps), and the charm of the game. It's not what you think it would be from the cover, especially the PS3 one. I beat it in a night and a few hours the next day. My ending wasn't satisfactory, but I'm going to continue to work for other endings, help out all the people at the bar, get all of the trivia, etc. It's a game with a lot to do! You'd have to be one of those casual Call of Duty idiots to not love this game. A great work from a great company. Atlus, I may have said it before, but I freaking love you guys...Persona 5 is DEFINITELY going to be, at the very least, a visually appealing and entertaining game story-wise, just like it's predecessors. Guys, BE SURE TO GET THIS GAME IF YOU HAVEN'T by the way!
Rated 10 out of 10 by LevyTheAmishMan Puzzle Game with a Twist
If people are thinking of puzzle games, they would normally think of Tetris or Bejeweled. But Catherine takes the cake and deserves to be on the Hall of Fame for best puzzle game. The story of the game is suspenseful, dark, and most importantly deep. I was waiting to see what happens next in the story as I pass through each level. The voice acting in it is perfect (and I nearly contained myself when I discovered the voice of Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist was in it), the art style is simply beautiful for a game, and the concept overall is simply unexpected in a good way. I was expecting it to be a lackluster, but after getting into the story, it opened a new door. Catherine is a strange and twisted tale that deserves to be in the collection of anime fans, puzzle fans, fans of a good story, or fans of all of the above.
Rated 10 out of 10 by AsiaCakes My Favorite Game - EVER
I had extremely low expectations of this game. I wanted to try the demo before even thinking about buying it, but I haven't had internet on my xbox. I gave in and bought it after I saw it pre-owned and used my PowerUp card to get it for around $33 (including tax). I have to say that I am impressed like no other! This game is AMAZING. It has puzzling puzzles and a logical, interesting story line. It's almost as if you're watching t.v. while also playing a game. Really cool as I've never played anything like this before. The puzzles are really fun and take some thinking, but not too much. They vary as you progress just as the story line does, which changes according to your gameplay! I can't put this game down. Not boring at all and keeps you playing to figure out what happens next in the story! Worth all my money!
Rated 10 out of 10 by MrScuddles WOW......JUST WOW
When i first heard of Cathrine, my first thoughts were "oh its just another stupid puzzle game." however that proved not to be the point, after trying the demo from Xbox live i was hooked. the Best thing about this game is the story, it always keeps you looking forward to whats gonna happen next. As for the difficulty of the game i didn't find it too brutally hard, however there were some stages where i had to stop for a second and really think. I found the graphics of the game to be beautiful for cell-shading (not a huge fan of it). The game has about eight different endings i believe (not entirely sure) so i will probably end up playing it more times just to toy with the endings even though my first one was satisfactory. Overall Catherine is a GREAT GAME and is totally worth the money i spent for it.
Rated 10 out of 10 by harrymerkin Absolutely unlike any game ever!
It's really good to see an original game come out in an age where first person shooters are king. This game has one of the most intriguing and engaging stories ever. Right from the get go, you are forced to answer questions that will shape the story in someway or another. The game play is really addicting, but it is also quiet frustrating. It plays like Q-bert but more demented. The cut scenes are absolutely gorgeous, and the fact that you can communicate through text messages in game is awesome. I picked this game up at Gamestop the day it came out and I have already beat it. This game is hard to put down once you start it. You just want to keep playing to find out what or who is behind the main characters misery. I highly recommend this game to anyone who needs something refreshing to play.
Rated 9 out of 10 by TheSpaniard Catherine, or Katherine?
To start off, let me just say you WILL NOT be disappointed by this game's storyline. It is very well put together and develops in such a way that it keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. Voice acting was excellent, Animation (which bounces back and forth between Anime and cell-shade depending on scene) was right on. Character designs were believable (and relatable to most people). The music was catchy, and not simply some mashed-together blips to add a soundtrack to the game like others often do. Gameplay was very thought provoking (for those of you who don't know, this is a PUZZLE game). There's really not a whole lot that wasn't very well done in the game...except for one thing. and the ONLY thing that kept me from giving it a 10. Being able to see what you're doing in a puzzle game like this is incredibly important, especially when time is of the essence (as it always is in this game), which is why I have to knock it a point for the camera angles switching when you need them most. Although this doesn't take away a whole lot from the game, it becomes very annoying after a while. But besides that, this is an excellent game for Mature minded individuals, and definitely worth your time for a playthrough.
Rated 10 out of 10 by CGisNinja Very fun and interesting but unbalanced.
Definitely great puzzles and story. Love all the different endings. But the puzzles tend to change from laughably easy to impossible without help. The camera during nightmares can also be irritating, especially during bosses. Other than those two flaws this game is incredible and memorable!
The story is about Vincent, the hero, being afraid to commit to his gf Katherine. He ends up cheating on her with a young girl named Catherine. Afterwards he starts having nightmares where if he dies in his dream, he'll die in real life: a problem affecting many men lately.(This is where the puzzles start!) During the day you get to use your phone and talk to people at a bar to change Vincent's future.
I won't give away any spoilers but this game is worth picking up
