Beowulf: The Game
Some good, more bad
I actually bought this game because my wife picked it up right before checkout at our local Gamestop; she enjoyed both the book and the movie, as did I. Once I started playing though I realized that this game might have been a rushed job to coincide with the theatrical release, and was a bit broken because of that. Most of the game is made up of quicktime events that make you hit the correct buttons at the correct time to progress through to the next similar event. The storyline does move almost exactly with the film, which is not bad, but it does make for some odd pacing and strange interactions with in game characters. The one major plus is that you unlock achievement points without much effort. I believe each Xbox 360 disc release requires at least 1000 points in the game, and this game hands them out like swag at a comic convention. Since I love building my gamer score, this is a plus! Another plus is the game is only six dollars (under six with your EDGE card) so you get a decent game that you don't break the bank for. If you like Beowulf you should pick up this game for a quick romp through the movie scenarios, if not, you should spend your money elsewhere.
I recently purchased this game and have to say I was very pleased. The storyline was very close to the movie and not very jumpy. The challenge is somewhat difficult and is even hard on normal. The only thing I could really conplain about is the graphics. They are okay but do not fit the xbox 360 graphics. The weapons are awesome even if they break very easily. Another thing someone could ask for in a sequel is level select and that the bodies don' t disappear. Possibly they could make the characters look a tad more realistic. Sometimes button sequences can get annoying but you will get the hang of it after a while of playing the game. Another cool thing is before each battle you can pick the weapons you would like to bring to battle. It would also be very cool if you could play as different characters. The game is very good though overall.
Actually playing The movie
Actually, there is a new Beowulf movie coming out this fall and this game is probably based on that movie. Your probably thinking of the last one made that starred the original Highlander guy. There have actually been a bunch of movies based off this classic English epic poem. As far as I've heard, none of them have been very good or very true to the original poem. Most of them are based on the first foe Beowulf fought in the poem, Grendel, who Beowulf kills rather quickly and easily in the poem. The tougher foes he faces in the poem are Grendel's vengeful mother, and the toughest foe is the Golden Dragon he faces years later in the end of the poem. I would love to see this or some future Beowulf movie and game be closer to the original poem.
Another movie game...
Well lets not compare this to the transformer game right away, remember this is ubisoft. The only recent ubi title that wasnt all fantastic graphics was the recent csi game and there isnt much else to say about that. Beowulf is the 'true tough guy' of all folk lore. The movie looks good, lets just hope ubi isn't letting some new kids get their feet wet with this title and that there is a good team behind this.
Another game based on a movie.
Honestly i have no idea how this is gonna turn out. If you ever played Transformer another game based on the movie it sucked....ALoT, which pretty much convinced me to never play a game based a movie EVER!!!.....but who knows?.....this game could be the next gears of war.........maybe!?
Hit or Miss
If you have read Beowulf, you know it is a great book. The one great attribute or problem is that the book is just about fight after fight after fight. We will have to see how the movie is with Angelina Jolie.
playing a movie
An article in my magize said this will be a game that you will play like a movie. so im assuming there will be a lot of cut sceens and everyonce and awhile you will get to fight. the movie was very cheesey.
I hope this is good
Beowulf inspired Conan. He was the original badass. I have a feeling that this game will play much like King Kong did. It should be very cinimatic. Beowulf could kill Kratos and Conan in his sleep.
