Death Jr.: Root of Evil
An entertaining 3d platformer worth playing
The level designs are creative and should appeal to Beatlejuice fans. There are challenging points, but most of the levels can be beaten with botton mashing. I would be comfortable putting any child or less-than-skilled gamer (eg:parents) in front of this game without fear of overwhelming or insulting the player. After beating it, there is no reason to return to it. I would suggest it as a <$10 game.
Not A Bad Port And Not A Bad Buy
Death, Jr. Root of Evil for the Wii is, if you dont already know, a port of the PSP game. Backbone Entertainment did add some new "bells and whistles" to add to the overall experience and it definitely turns out for the better. DJ:ROE has you cast as DJ or his school sweetheart Pandora as they go out and about trying to find cocoons for their science project. When they do find one they both fight for it, and unknowingly in there bickering, awaken an evil that was inside of the cocoon. This evil female sense's that the only thing that can stop her is DJ's dad Death himself, so she goes and captures him. From there it's a race to stop her, rescue DJ's dad and save the world, or in their case underworld. Right off the bat once you start playing you'll notice the graphics. Personally its one of the best Wii games that I've seen to date. The cutscenes and in game graphics look great, they are VERY well done and it looks better than most shovel ware crap that comes out on the Wii. The levels also have a nice variety to them as well as good design. Another aspect that turned out incredibly well are the controls. Backbone has done an excellent job mapping out the controls for Death, Jr. Everything from the motion control (they are kept minimal and are actually very responsive, thank god) to the camera (its rotated with the - and + buttons) feels great. There's also a cool selection of specific weapons for both DJ and Pandora (the parts of each weapon must be found throughout the levels before you can use them)DJ can use his guns, c4 hamsters, toilet paper flame launcher, etc while Pandora has her tommy gun, whip, and mallet among others. A big plus would also be that you can play the entire campaign in 2 player split screen co-op, with player 1 controlling DJ and player 2 controlling Pandora. My few negatives to DJ:ROE would be the length of the campaign. You should be done with it within 5-6 hours at the most. That's too short of a time for a platformer. I also feel that the music, while not bad at all, could have been better. And the voice acting is decent at best. A lot of it feels natural, but a lot of it feels kind of off or forced. Other than that, DJ:ROE is a very solid platformer. Eidos and Backbone should definitely continue the DJ franchise on the Wii as it really does seem and feel like a natural fit for it. Hopefully we'll get a true sequel sometime in the future.
