Letting a championship slip out of your grasp can be a harrowing experience for a franchise. Some teams never get over the hump, fading back into the pack never to emerge as a contender again. Others use the disappointment as motivation to improve and prepare for a second run. Visual Concepts found itself in this position after server woes sullied the launch of the otherwise impressive NBA 2K15. Using the offseason to retool, the series has emerged with its best effort in years.

NBA 2K16 is the virtual equivalent of a player who can play all five positions on the court. The already strong gameplay receives a boost this year from a redesigned post game that lets you back down players with a press of the left trigger, a welcome return to days of old. Passing also received an overhaul, giving you three face buttons for lobs, bounce passes, and the traditional toss. Double tapping these buttons gives you quick access to alley-oops and flashy passes as well. Having these options at your fingertips is great for specific situations, but expect to still use the icon-based passing because directional passing can occasionally misread your intent and send a ball across the court instead of into the post.

You will need all the tools at your disposal to keep up with the impressive A.I. in NBA 2K16, which is the best I've seen in a sports game to date. Each team employs different strategies, making every game feel different. Teams run play sets to get their best players involved, attack quickly in transition, and react to your tactics on the fly. This dynamic gameplay translates across NBA 2K16's strong collection of game modes.

For the last few years the destination mode for NBA 2K games has been MyCareer, which puts you in the shoes of an up-and-coming baller breaking into the NBA. This year 2K handed the storytelling duties to famed director Spike Lee, who takes the experience in a decidedly cinematic direction. Users still create their own player, but Lee is the true owner of this story. Player agency means little to Lee - no matter what race or creed you create for your MyPlayer, you play the role of "Frequency Vibrations," a high school hoops sensation born and raised in Harlem. I embraced this narrative direction since this is the story Lee wanted to tell, but the dissonance of seeing my pasty white player interacting with his black twin sister ultimately made me go recreate a different character so the cutscenes wouldn't be so jarring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great GAME. STILL PLAY IT. SOLD BACK MY 2K17 THIS WAS A GREAT GAME, IF THEY GONNA MAKE NBA 2K18 LIKE THIS WITH WORK ON THE GRAPHICS AND FIX THE GAMEPLAY A BIT AND AWFUL ANIMATIONS THAT NBA 2K17 HAVE I'LL BUY IT. BUT I PLAY THIS GAME STILL TIL THIS DAY. THE DRIBBLE SYSTEM IS GREAT, DON'T KNOW WHY THEY CHANGED IT IN 2K17. ALSO I LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN BE AN ALL AROUND PLAY. YOU LOSING A GAME ON NBA 2K16 IS MORE ABOUT SKILL, HOW YOU WOULD ATTACK A SITUATION IN A REAL NBA GAME. 17 IS UP TO THE ARCHITEC YOU DECIDED TO PICK. IF I CAN SHOOT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY DEFENSE . ALSO I LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN GAIN ALL ATTRIBUTES THROUGH MYCAREER, SO YOU CAN THEN CHOOSE TO GO TO MYPARK OR PRO AM AT FULL POWER. YOU'RE NOT FORCED TO PLAY A GAME MORE IN ORDER TO GET YOUR PLAYER BETTER OR GAIN MORE ATTRIBUTES LIKE NBA 2K17. NBA 2K17 IS VERY TRASH AND TIME CONSUMING. NBA 2K16 IS THE BEST 2K EVER MADE.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Leave Well Enough Alone, 2K... When it comes to MyCareer, nobody has captured the single player experience better than 2K. Started with NBA 2K and they've managed to convert this over to WWE 2K rather nicely. (Smoothing those rough edges out and that's really improving, I fully expect WWE 2K17 to blow the lid off but that's another story entirely.) For NBA 2K16, coming off 2K15, wow. I can't begin to express my disappointment when I first got into it. Yes, it was absolutely great being able to play with some college teams. But I feel like there was SO MUCH put into the story, it made it rather difficult to enjoy even on a casual level. It's one thing to not be able to play through a full season. (Don't fret, your stats won't be THAT BAD so long as you make the most of the few games they do let you partake in.) It's everything that follows that first season which gets rather nutty in a bad way. It's here that the experience becomes a trial in frustration even if you suspend disbelief and all aspects of common sense. Compared to 2K15, it plays a little differently. Tougher to get steals, but eh. Once they let you really get into the meat and potatoes of MyCareer, it's fun but it's a serious chore going through what you have to in order to get there. (Don't get me started on the ridiculous name they picked for this guy, which you cannot change or even alter in the slightest.) It's obvious that Spike modeled this dude after Reggie Miller, which makes sense given the history these two had during the mid 90s (refer to the 30 For 30 documentary Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks for more on this). This was too reliant on cutscenes and well, it takes away from one of the best things 2K has going for itself right now. I'm glad that Sony let folks who have a Plus subscription play it for free for a month, really glad the price dropped on it overall. But last year's MyCareer where you get to come in as an undrafted rookie was a much better deal than this thing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Free on psn !!! Dont waste your time. I have always been a fan of good basketball games...This isnt one of them. The shooting mechanics are goodish.( hard to be perfect on games).Defense mechanics arent present. REALLY stupid AI (except opposing teams AI). Star players are op.Online is ok with friends. But lags alot. Often drop the ball with no good reason to why. I have put close to 20 hours into the game and Im fairly good( not great) but cant help but want to have 2k or EA to make a functioning good basketball game. Guess ill be waiting a while. 4.5/10.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favorite game ever!!! This game lets you do millions of modes as long as you have Ps4+. you can play pro-am which allows you to play word-wide tournaments and you get to create your court, your uniforms, and your stadium. Also you can play my park, online head to head, and lots and lots more. I probably am certain everyone would like this game, but I think it is best to get the game for someone who is 8-16 because younger kids might not know a lot of things about the game of basketball. To play 2k16 you must really have a good understanding of basketball. I play basketball a ton, and I still don't get the rules of trading players from a draft, and don't get other stuff as well. The game is not innapropiet in any way except mild lyrics. Ease a play is 6. Not the easiest game to understand. And once again get this game it is the best game ever!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Spike Lee should not make video games Graphics were great but the my player was horrible. Worst IV ever played. You have no control, it is more of a movie with a few minutes of game play then halftime speech with coach then it's over. Spike Lee ruined the game. If you are white the story/movie makes no sense. It focuses more on accessories and shoes than the actual skill of your player. Big fan of the My player and they ruined it for me. Will never buy another nba2k without playing it somewhere else first. Glad 2k stopped making baseball games because they are messing up sports games. Hopefully the future game will get better. Fix the problems don't just patch them and make the game "playable"
