XCOM: Enemy Unknown
its been nearly over 15 years since this game made its original debut, have played it off and on since then. I have been hoping that someone would pick up the title and do a re-make of the title, I hope they stay as close to the original as possible while bringing it into the new era of games. I mean think about it, this game was made before high end console systems, and 3D tv. I can only hope that the dynamics of the battlescapes still hold the breath holding tension of when you end your turn and find out if you men survive just one more round. Or the aliens are just as cool showing up out of the fog. Things I due hope for, is a more in depth report system on monthly budgets, as well as a more detailed globe, and more options for areal combat. I hope the weapons and research into them are more in depth as well, I wan't more details, I want to see more complexity to dissecting aliens, maybe a fail ratio on it. don't want it to be just a matter of one alien body and your good to go, want to see you having to do several to get a better understanding, like a progression level for it.
Fantastic Strategy Game! Faithfully Remade.
This game is incredibly addicting and very well executed by Firaxis. If you're a fan of strategy games of any kind, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this. Great for gamers into science fiction books or movies like Aliens or Men in Black. It's also totally faithful to the original X-Com games with the exception that it's more accessible and not as ruthlessly difficult (though it has variable difficulty levels, it certainly can be made as hard as the old games if you're an X-Com aficionado). I loved the original X-Com games and this remake is everything I had hoped for and more. The overall design of the game is incredibly well executed and the many elements of complexity are perfect for the hardcore strategy gamer. Throw in a bit of nostalgia and some really cool high-tech modernized elements and you have what I think is a nearly perfect game. I can't stop playing it and neither will you!
It's 11 PM already? I am skipping work tomorrow
X-Com: Enemy Unknown is a great and worthy heir to the X-Com title. Real-time strategy game fans rejoice: a fantastic console RTS is now available for your consumption. Happily, I was able to purchase this gem for a measly $40 at a time when the standard price of a "new" game (which is likely just a warmed-over sequel) is $60. RTS games of this caliber are not new. X-Com was a PC RTS many moons ago. I came into contact with it by way of the "Jagged Alliance" series which borrowed its game engine from X-Com. I must admit, that I would have preferred this game to have been wrapped in Jagged Alliance clothing as I appreciate the mercenary story line better than the alien invasion premise of X-Com, but the game play for this $40 title is superb. The sound was surprisingly impressive as well. Very creepy and appropriate. Time slips away amazingly fast when one is engrossed in this game. I have been having trouble getting up in the morning since X-Com has pushed back my bedtime by an average of 3 hours. Not a fast paced game but if you like games that require planning and thought, this one is for you.
A Faithful Remake
When I heard this game was coming out, I was not sure the game was going to be good. I remember the original series (I owned a version made for the PS1), and the thought of having the series in the hands of a new developer had me a little worried this game would be a bust. I am happy to say Xcom Enemy Unkown is a very faithful remake. The graphics are outstanding for a turn-based strategy, the sound is reminiscent of the eerily haunting soundtrack of the original series, and though I am still in the tutorial (which lasts several missions), the gameplay is great. The movement is fluid, not clunky like older hex style mapping systems. Difficulty is forgiving - if you have trouble with the game difficulty, you can adjust it via the pause menu at any time (as long as you are not playing impossible setting). Additionaly, I have restarted the game already, and the characters and missions were different in each game, so with that kind of randomness combined with your decisions throughout the game (and their outcomes), there is definitely replay value. Really I am pleasantly surprised of the overall game. Though it may not appeal to everyone (being turned based), if you are into strategy games and/or the original Xcom series, you will enjoy this game. My recommendation - turn the lights off and turn the sound up when you play Xcom Enemy Unkown. Yeah, it's that cool of a game!
Could Be Better......
First, I like this game but I found flaws while playing. I should get this out of the way that it has nothing to do with the game-play, I believe it is good and hope more games with this kind of game-play come out. However I found flaws with the graphics such as glitches, it could be that I had high expectations graphic wise, but characters appear that their guns, arms, legs, etc. were going through their cover. I dislike when they sprint because the camera will get stuck behind a wall or something and I feel that messes with the experience of the game. I feel that is the only flaws but I rated the game low-ish because it happened very often. It could just be me and I notice these things more then the average gamer but I feel that this game glitches a lot but I hope they make another one like this, hopefully with less glitches in it. Thank You For Reading And Have A Nice Day!!!!!
If you love strategy, you will love X-com
I originally purchased X-com with two other games as a bundle intending to never play it. I finally gave the game a shot and I fell in love. The comical guns as well as the mind blowing strategy made this a instant favorite. The game is part turn based, part economy. After, each battle you have you are brought back to head quarters where you can purchase weapons and build facilities. However, you should probably be careful buying too much in the beginning can come back to bite you. As the details imply, the game is about a Alien invasion. Don't let the concept fool you they did far more than stellar with the concept. If you worried it would be cheesy, don't. If your in to using your brain, its a great game. Again the graphics aren't the best but, I believe they did the best with what they had. It makes up in game play, what it lacks in graphics. Next, their is a online portion of the game where you can actually play as aliens. This, is a very interesting part of the game. Lastly, if you look up footage your going to think its the most boring game in the world. You can only enjoy X-COM one way. Through actually playing it. Your not wasting your money when it comes to this game.
If you are new at it the tutorial will help you by getting you use to the controls and help you what you do affects the entire game play
This game looks cool. Although, people that like science fiction and turn base games should buy it. Also if you do not know what this game is about, it is about aliens trying to takeover earth and you are in charge of a elite group that is trying to stop the alien invaders. If you do not like turn based games then this game may not be the game for you. But! This one is different, the other turn based games are not as cool as this one.
Good, Challenging Game
This is a pretty challenging game and a must for fans of strategy games but this game won't be for everyone. It's really hard to lose one of your squadmates after you've built them up a couple of levels and know that one simple error or mis-step on your part can get them killed. I had a sniper with 4 missions and 7 kills under her belt and she bled out because I failed to bring an extra medikit and because she was only in half-cover. Half-cover is pointless because the aliens will hit you anyway and have amazing line of sight aiming. I like the variety of thing you are able to do at the base. You really have to manage your finances and realize that no matter what the decisions you make as far as what countries to help always has consequences.
A fresh game idea for consoles.
Excellent game for the PlayStation 3 library, it gives gamers, who weren't familiar with the original XCOM, a great chance to experience it. While graphics and sound may not be this game's selling point, the core of this game is its gameplay. This game has excellent gameplay, you will find yourself playing the game over and over. The game also does a great job in keeping you in your toes, thinking of new strategies and squad decisions; not to mention that the game continuously put you situations in which you have to make choices without a clear answer that carry various consequences for your actions. I will like to see more of this type of games in the PlayStation. Hopefully there is a polished sequel in the horizon. GREAT GAME 2K FIRAXIS!
