Needle in a haystack
Of all the WW2 shooters...the cods...mohs...and battlefields this one stands alone becuase of the supernatural powers. The veil and having supernatural abilities is fun..but the nazis r incredibly stupid. One time i was in a firefight and I shot one and the rest swamered the dead guy like in nazi zombies. The graphics r a little dated but the amount of cuztomization allowed makes up 4 it. As for some of the cities..it looks like a missed opertunity. Magically theres just a bunch of nazis in a giant abandoned area. (Whats the point of staying?) Activision should have added civilians milling around with the nazis to express the mood of the game, maybe then the fact of giant resistance signs wouldnt look so obvious. What is the resistance fighting 4, an abandoned town? (Nazis, how do u not see that massive sign on the door?) If the nazis in this game were like the ones in the actual war its obvious how the allies won. But the game offers a good amount of challenging and different expirences that lack from just about every other shooter, the large amount of cuztomization is a nice touch, overall i would rent it and then maybe buy it, but it wont last long becuase the online sucks, and lags more then a wireless connection to cod (as a host) and the story gets old....fast.
This game was great! it took me about 18 hours to beat it, it had some challenge with the bosses. Graphics are next-gen and controls are really good. Finding hidden items make it very replayable, along with the added cheat unlock at the end to go back and really put the heat down on the hardest setting. If you like Bioshock you will like this game, the weapons are really cool too, a mix of WW2 type with sci-fi. I would give the game itself a 10, but there is one thing that really dissapointed me... Multi-player, online. It has got to be the worst online-play since Gears, very late 90's. Dreamcast had games that were ten times better to play online than this. So if you want it for online play do not buy it you will hate it, but if you are content with a great single player story mode then you won't be let down.
Wolfenstein feels like it falls somewhere between FarCry2 and Cod WaW. It uses a city that works as a central hub where you can explore, accept missions and upgrade weapons and power somewhat like FarCry's open world map although far smaller. Cod WaW and Wolfenstein contain the similarities of both being world war 2 shooters but the similarities also run a bit deeper including the control scheme and how the ai reacts and functions. Wolfenstein has a moderately interesting story but the gameplay makes up for this with it's fun, inventive weapons and sheer difficulty. I personally thought the campaign was more enjoyable than both FarCry's and Cod (not Cod 4 though that game will probably always be the #1 fps) but the multiplayer looks small and crippled next to those 2 (the multiplayer was seperately developed from the game by a different company). My only complaints are that when I started the game, the framerate seemed slow and that the multiplayer is only ok.
Happily surprised to see the high average score
If you look past the very-average graphics: you will find a game with a surprisingly amount of depth, content, and quality. Don't be put off with the gun-play of the very-early game... all the weapons have various upgrades including recoil-reduction and rifling to increase accuracy. If you give this game a chance you'll be rewarded with quite a neat game.... which is why I'm a little surprised about the (at least currently) high average review score of around 9... I would have thought there would be a bunch of people that didn't give the game enough of a chance to see past it's initial warts.
What sets Wolfenstein apart from your run-of-the-mill First Person Shooter is/are the following:
1) Lots of collectables, usually related to unlocking weapon or "Veil" (kind of a magic-type system) upgrades. Each weapon has a handful of upgrades and they are pretty hefty.... not of the "Add 3% damage" variety.
2) Similar to another of id's games, "Rage", the main and side missions are scattered throughout a few hub areas.... for instance: if you are headed to a mission based in a hospital, you must first fight your way through the streets of the current hub city... and as the game progresses the enemies you encounter between missions get both more numerous and more dangerous.
3) There are quite a few side missions, usually having a good amount of content.
4) You get cool magic-type abilities and some of the coolest weapons I've encountered in a FPS (then again, id usually comes through in the weapons department)
If you are the type of person who is willing to give a game a fair shake AND not have somewhat average graphics deter you: there is quite a lot to like in Wolfenstein. Pretty long game, too, especially if you try to find a lot of the hidden goodies and cash to buy upgrades.... some really awesome weapons, too.
It's just OK!
I was extremely exited when I bought the new Wolfenstein! Don't get me wrong, the campaign is awesome (except for the fact that B.J. looks like a wimpy shampoo model rockin' a lame leather jacket) because there's plenty of action, lots of gore, and decent graphics-nothing to WOW about though. Resistance2 still stomps all over this game! But after you beat the campaign, you will tire from this game fast! The multiplayer has to be one of the worst ever-an utter failure! PS2 multiplayer games were better for Alien51! It really is a joke when you go to the multiplayer; a complete letdown! The lag is rediculous! If you have a wireless connection, you're screwed! You can't host any games and inside the game booklet, it even says that you will have trouble unless you plug your internet directly into the PS3. What year is this again? Overall it's a perfect game to rent because the Campaign really is sick, but I wouldn't buy this!
After playing the demo I knew I had to have this game. The demo only offered a little taste to the real deal. Once you put this game in you will not want to put it down! The really great part is the expansion of weapons you are able to use, the mods greatly improve the game and experience. After the 1st playthrough I plan on going again to collect all the items I missed.
This game is an awesome representation of the classic Wolfenstein style. The characters are continued from "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and the storyline is just as great. The same type of thrilling enemies and unique challenges are brought into this new game. The regular graphics are good, but could be a little better. On the normal setting, the challenge of the game is at a decent level for the average player. The boss levels require some thinking to figure out how to defeat the enemy, however, they are all do-able. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys first-person shooters. You'll never know what to expect from the enemies in this game. They might be invisible and kill you upon first impact, or they might just be the normal shooting "bad guy." Either way, you're in for a fun, adventurous game.
WORTH A BUY, MIGHT RENT BEFORE
This game is very good. It has a good lasting appeal, it is different though. thats why I say you might should rent before you buy it. but if it is your type then you will love it, if not then you will still like it.
Nazis & the Occult.
I'm very excited about this game. I never played the original. I did play Return to castel wolfienstien for the Ps2 when it came out years ago. Since then i think i speak for most of us when i say we have become used to current gen sytems. With this game i'm eager to it play based on the story. I know alot of people are tired of WW2 shooters except for Call of duty world at war. I know this is not going to be like the nazi zombie mode on call of duty. What people fail to realize is how deep into the occult the Nazis actually were. It's something i have done alot of research on. I'm eager to see how this turns out. I know it will be a great shooter. I dont think though it will be anything like Call of duty as that was based on more fact. Where this game is more of a what if this actually happened? Just because it's set during world war 2, i doubt it will be like any WW2 game that is out there now.
I rented this game and it is awesome! Blood and a perfect shooter! You are a dude who has a round object thing and it contains powers and they are really helpful through out the game. It is based in WW2 so you are fighting Nazis who some stronger Nazis also have this power. You have your basic WW2 weapons: MP40, Rifle, bazooka, and there is this awesome gun which contains the power. You shoot it and it blows people up! Sweetz! Ok, I am glad I rented this because it is now my favorite shooter! Online... It is pretty fun but Only 12 people each match, but at least 6 people per team. Also, in online It shows your enemies health bar so you know when your enemy is about to die. It is hard online cause everyone is so good at it. But you just need to keep training. Anyway, Graphics are good, Guns, and campaign mode is the bomb...I recommend this game! You will not be disappointed! I give it 5/5!
