Great game for RPG/Strategy
I'll start with the storyline. To be very brief, the storyline for this game was apparently SO GOOD that they made an Anime series based on this game's storyline. I LOVE storylines, which is why I love most RPGs. The length of this game was great, not intensely long, but not disturbingly short. The graphics are really based on a matter of opinion, this game has almost like a 3D anime kind of look to me. It's not something that your average person could just BLAZE through. I really like the soundtrack that plays, the interface is pretty neat and not overwhelming. The controls are really easy to learn. My favorite thing about this game has to be the storyline, it's just really great! Although....the replay value for this game is pretty "eh" if you know what I mean. My second, is probably the fact that it made ME think, there's probably some brainiacs out there that might disagree, but whatever. So...Yeah that's my review....I DO NOT IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM, REGRET BUYING THIS GAME!
You shouldnt even need to read this. Just buy already.
Sega did an amazing job on this product. This is probably the best rpg for the ps3 out there so far. Everything feels "nice". When i say nice i mean you don't feel like "What the..." what am i supposed to do? The game does a great job showing you how to play and slowly lets go of your hand to a point where your feeling like and expert strategist. Then there is the story. It grasps you tightly and makes you want to know what going to happen. Very well told and the art presentation of how its told is amazingly done well. I was skeptical about the whole shooter kinda rpg. I was mistaken to be skeptical. The music is awesome. Yes there are a lot of cutscenes but to me i think they fit in nicely since they tell the story well. I'm a fan of games like Radiatta stories, star ocean, valkrie profile, eternal sonata and others not related to the genre. This is a very good game. If it game of the year, it totally deserved it. I'm going to stop typing now though so you can go ahead and purchase this game.
Great turnbased/realtime hybrid RPG. It's been said in other reviews, but if your looking for an anime Black-Ops, this game is not for you. However, if you are into cerebral stratgey with an incredible artistic flair and depth of gameplay, you gaming desires will be satified. I'm not one to judge story-line, but it's compelling enough to keep you interested from start to finish. The characters are affable and the voice-overs are decent. (Do I hear the voice of Radical Edward from the great Cowboy Bebop?Probably.) One small gripe is the character movement. It can be a bit clunky at times. This can be a pain in the butt, especially when you have to move quickly and think quickly. But you'll soon anticipate this and compensate before you make your move. Bravo to the art team. I am green with envy of the vision they brought to life. Hardcore RPGers rejoice. Can't wait to play the second installment.
This is one of the greatest games on the ps3 in my opinion, dont listen to people like chodaboy who say its crap just because they cant kill the enemy valkyria. The fact is, your not supposed to kill the girl on that level, and the game tells you not to engage her. Strategy and chance make no difference when someone is dumb enough to fire bullet rounds at a giant tank. The game is pretty challenging, and offers lots of ways to beat a mission, though character customization is easy, it takes away from the complexity of it. Shots hit is also NOT based on chance, rather on the accuracy of the character you are using; the reticle is different sizes based on each character and their levels. This game puts many factors of a real war into play, like trenches, cover, headshots, and even weak points in tank armor. Overall, this game is great, I've beat it once already, and found myself picking it up again just recently.
Great intro to Strategy RPGs.
Taking place in an alternate version of Europe in the mid-1930s, Valkyria Chronicles tells the story of a militia squad from Gallia, a small, independent nation, caught up in a war between two powerful factions -- the Atlantic Federation to its west, and the East Europan Imperial Alliance (a.k.a. the Empire).
Both the story and the style of play stand out in this Sega title. The game covers the Second Europan War (E.W. II), with the Imperial invasion of Gallia in March 1935 E.C. (Europan Calendar) as the starting point. The following battles, as well as the events in between, are mostly seen from the viewpoint of Squad 7, led by Lt. Welkin Gunther. Gunther and the other members of his squad have their own reasons to fight, and as you progress through the campaign, side chapters involving Squad 7's key will be unlocked, adding even more depth to the story. The Imperial forces have compelling figures as well, as the leader of the Gallian invasion, Prince Maximillian, and the Generals under his direct command have their own reasons to fight as well.
The gameplay stands out just as much as the plot. In each battlefield, your squad will be able to take a set number of actions (based on Command Points - C.P.) during your Phase; after that, the enemy force will do the same with its phase. You'll choose which unit to spend a C.P. on from a top-down perspective common with many Strategy games. But the twist comes once you select a unit -- the view switches to a third-person shooter style, in which you'll move your unit (either personnel or a tank) to a desired location and take an action (attack an enemy, heal yourself or an ally, etc.), then end that unit's turn.
If you've ever wondered if Strategy R.P.G.s are for you, Valkyria Chronicles is a great starting point. Be sure to seek it out if you can.
My favorite PS3 game.
Have you ever noticed that people like a game so much they give everything a 10? Well when you look at this game, there is a reason you see all the reviews giving it a 10. Valkyria Chronicles is a third-person shooter rpg that does require a bit of luck, but does take skill to play. I am a huge rpg fan, and I just started liking shooters so this was the perfect game. The game has your enemies shoot at you when your running, but when your aiming the shooting stops, which is really helpful. Before you buy this game, I want to warn you about the games challenge. It is very hard. I am on Chapter 10 and have failed every battle so far at least once, so this game WILL cause some frustration. When you look past the challenge of the game, you'll find that the gameplay is fun and addictive. I was playing skirmish battles for hours because it was so fun. The game does have some rpg elements to it like upgrading weapons and tanks, using strategy to complete the missions, and the game gives you background on most of the characters. Finally, if you like rpgs and want to try a shooter, this is the game for you.
Very let down
I read lots of reviews on this site about this game, and they were all good. But after playing the game for 2 weeks it’s just not fun anymore. The game play is a great idea and it works at the beginning of the game. But when you get to some bosses, (like the god like valkyria chick and the super tank), it comes down to luck if you can beat them. Because when you fire shots all you can do is pray you hit something and it doesn’t hit the ground or something stupid like that. If you give her a chance she will kill you in one hit. I spent 3 to 4 days just leveling up in the skirmish mode so I would be able to hold my ground just fine, but I guess when you have to face a girl with super powers that can’t be hurt your level doesn’t make a difference. So if you like games that involve chance more than skill this is you game, if you don’t like rolling the dice every turn then don’t waste your money. I only wish I could get my $** back.
Valkyria Chronicles is the best turn-based strategy game I have given enough of my attention span to play through it. First the graphics are really nice with the cell-shading; the characters look like anime characters, which gives it a unique feel; this is also the first time I"ve seen it done so well. The sound is everything you would expect -- nothing wrong. The gameplay is unique as it is the frst turn-based first person shooter. Most of the enemies actually shoot back at you if you get too close to them. The tanks are fun and actually seem to make the game easy at times, but you can just leave them behind for an added challenge, but I just drove right through the enemies with them. However, once you unlock Hard difficulty, you will need to protect your tanks a lot more because the enemy won't let up and they do a lot more damage. Also be sure to watch where you step! On Hard, there are so many land mines, it's actually kind of funny. There is a luck factor as you may notice even your tank missing some close shots. It may agitate you at times, but not enough to make you hate the game. The only thing this game is lacking is multiplayer.
One of the best games ever.
I will be honest at first I thought this was just another kids game, but my friend kept insisting that I buy it. Once I did I could not stop playing this game. It is a grate concept. Strategy mixed with third person shooter, and turn based. At the start of each turn you get a view of the map and then select a unit. Once you have selected a unit it switches to a third person view ware you can advance and attack. After you attack your turn is over and you can select another unit. The storyline is grate with about 10 minutes of video each chapter and unlockable extra story. You also get to select your squad, and can buy lots of weapons, and tank upgrades. Truly a unique game that everyone should play.
An interesting surprise
We picked this game up as a rental and quickly found ourselves spending vast amounts of time playing it. The cell shaded graphics are simply awesome, and the soundtrack and voice overs flesh those between battle moments out nicely. There are many RPG style elements such as tank and weapon upgrades, but players never feel overwhelmed by them as everything flows smoothly and the interface is simple to pick up. The strategy element often seemed to mix the old Command & Conquer and Call of Duty games. Being able to physically postion your troops to set up ambushes, pick off enemies at a distance with snipers, or raining mortar fire down with your tank. leaves you feeling in complete control throughout each mission. And yes you will find yourself shaking your head as your well thought out plan falls apart, you'll have just as much fun improvising your strategy on the fly. While we have yet to complete the game, we are quite taken with it and fully intend to purchase it ASAP. We would highly recommend this game for players of most skill levels and age groups.
