Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Proper HD treatment of a timeless SF classic
Released in 1994, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was the fifth edition of Street Fighter 2 to hit arcades, and it's still considered to be one of the best fighting games of all time. In addition to the infamous Akuma, it introduced super combos and juggling; both of which have become staples of the fighting genre. It seems fitting then to give it a proper HD revival, complete with totally redone visuals--and that's exactly what this is.
Thankfully, very little has been lost in the transition. The UDON artists did a spectacular job and everything handles the way it used to. I'm sure there are some minor differences if you scrutinize--such as hit boxes that may be slightly off--but for the most part it's perfect. Even the way the CPU fights is spot on, and yes...Akuma is still a pain until you remember his weaknesses. Online versus play is present and works pretty well, complete with leaderboards and spectating while waiting to join matches. My only gripe is that custom control schemes refuse to be saved for some reason (you'll have to adjust them each time you play).
If you're new to 2D fighting games, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix is the perfect boot camp to show you the ropes. The pacing isn't quite as chaotic as other 2D fighters out there, the commands / combos are basic, and there are only 17 characters to learn. As for veterans of the SF series, this revision is certainly worth it--don't hesitate to buy!
