Odin Sphere is a action-based game that is a hybrid of RPG elements. Alchemy, item management, and a well throught out action system. There are a lot of different elements like a stamina bar so it isn't just hit the attack button over and over. There is a lot of strategy and different characters and storys that unfold. The graphics are beautiful and surprising that this was a PS2 game, it could easily sell very well as a PS3 game. The game is cute, built for the hardcore and has a rather serious storyline. This is a must buy for $9.99.
Rated 10 out of 10 by lobothesacred3 Odin Sphere
Odin Sphere is a serious story involving five characters and their crossing paths in order to secure their future, but in many ways the end of the world is inevitable. As put forth by a dragon that can see the future the prophecies will be completed and even foreknowledge can't stop what has been foreseen. The ending despite being foretold still feels sad and depressing in its own way even with the rebirth of the world at the end.
Odin Sphere is an action RPG that includes an alchemy system, stamina bar, and food system. The various elements of the game work together rather well actually. The alchemy system can be used to create various potions that can aid the player and make certain boss battles rather easy. The stamina system prevents the player from simply spanning attacks nonstop while the food system can be used to heal the player or permanently increase your HP.
The game also offers a rather considerable challenge even on the normal difficulty setting. I'd honestly advise power leveling to overwhelm the bosses or carrying a large supply of healing potions or powerful food recovery items. It should also be noted that if you gain a HP Level you'll fully recover your HP so going into a fight with the bar almost filled can be to your advantage.
It should also be noted that each of the characters feels rather unique in terms of combat. All of them have different attack ranges, finishers, and aerial attacks. They also differ in terms of time to execute their moves as well.
The graphics in this game can sort of offer a love it or hate it relationship to be honest. Odin Sphere is 2D in terms of its character designs, but designs the background and foreground in such a way to make the game have a more 3 dimensional feel. On the other hand the environments feel extremely colorful and inviting to look at.
Odin Sphere offers a very strong soundtrack with many of the pieces enhancing the mood. Though, the sad nature of the story feels rather well expressed with the song that plays on the menu screen before you start a new game or load a save file.
On the other side of things the voice acting is a bit more mixed in the English audio. Most of the actors feel rather well placed, but some of them feel rather weak in their roles. And, even the main characters aren't completely immune from this issue. There are few emotional scenes that are ruined in the English audio do to poor line delivery in my opinion.
I haven't listened to the English audio and can't offer any opinion on it. Though, I do imagine that it would have better lip syncing then the English version.
Odin Sphere does offer a few things to do after you manage to beat the main story. You can watch an alternate ending to the one you received. The game contains two endings and which one you receive depends on if you picked the correct characters to face each of the bosses at the end of the game. The game also offers a few additional scenes that can be unlocked and an additional difficulty that can be unlocked that is known as heroic mode. In heroic mode your HP level never increases which makes the game much more difficult.
