Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag

Pursuing The Root Of All Evil

review by Joe Juba on October 29, 2013 at 03:00 AM
  • Concept:
A hotheaded pirate and his crew gain wealth and infamy on the high seas
  • Graphics:
The water looks amazing, but the framerate is unstable on current-gen platforms and Wii U
  • Sound:
The fantastic collection of sea shanties make this my favorite soundtrack in the series
  • Playability:
Changes to the fast-travel and weapon selection significantly tighten up the on-foot controls. Sailing usually works well, but steering a ship in combat is often more frustrating than fun
  • Entertainment:
Fun when you're chasing down your interests, but the enthusiasm deflates when working through the campaign missions
  • Replay:
    Moderately High

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its a great game One of the best story and endings in a game. Game play was okay but the parkour mechanic were hard to get use to you will probably fling all over the place during the beginning but you will get used to it. Graphics are okay but could have been improved even on next gen is not much of big change. Soundtrack was amazing love it when you're crew sing songs while on your ship. Its still has a latest appeal too me but their isn't too much enemies when you take over all the forts but still enjoyable, hunting is okay could have been more. Though it has its flaws its still a great game.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Assassin's Creed Game To Date So many different things you need to complete to get 100% synch... assassin contracts, naval contracts, templar hunts, main missions, ship/armor/outfit upgrading and buried treasure. Each location has its own animals to hunt and sell. Naval battles and pillaging is so much fun, however steering your ship can be a little annoying. Occasional glitches, but not too bad. The soundtrack is good for Assassin's Creed, but not compared to other games. The storyline is great and captures your attention from the start. Must buy for any Assassin's Creed fan

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One Of The Best Games That I've Ever Played! This game was amazing! I love how it is more unique than any other games in the series. Yes, you are an assassin, but the game doesn't focus on struggle, death, and how the Templar's are going to rule the world, like the other games do. Yes, it has that in there, but mainly you are just a pirate, who likes to pillage and plunder! The graphics are some of the best that I have seen in games. The soundtrack was amazing. The gameplay, while still not great, (basically just a button masher game), was improved a little from the games in the past. The story was very well written. My only problem is that there are LOTS of glitches and bugs in this game. I don't know if it's just my PS3 acting up or what, but you can't go ten minutes without something terrible happening! So, if you are to get this game, I would recommend getting it for PS4 or Xbox One instead. But if you don't have either of those yet, like me, you should still get it. Assassin's Creed II is still the best in the series, but this one rests as 2nd place in my book. This game is awesome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best pirate game ever While I will not say it is the best Assassins Creed game I have played it is the best pirate game I have ever played It is fun to go and gather the materials to upgrade your ship and make it the most deadliest ship in the Caribbean the missions can get a little boring sometimes but most are interesting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Only the Captain can say "Argh". And you'll be doing it a lot. Assasin's Creed IV: Black Flag is only a good game in that it isn't as bad as it's predecessor, Assassin's Creed III. I'll be straight, I've only really played the AC games for the incredibly deep and complex plot. However, I think they were planning to end the series or at least the first story arc with AC III. AC VI feels like it's an afterthought, scrambling to find it's relevance to the previous games. And overall, nothing happens in the game, plot-wise, besides the introduction of the Observatory, the Sage, and the player character (you). The characters were shallow and I didn't care about them. There's a nice dynamic between Edward and his merchant buddy you meet at the beginning of the game, but I forgot his name since he barely had a cameo afterwards. Gameplay-wise, it's okay. I really like the sailing aspect but it got old after a while and with no story payoff, I got bored with the game. I kept upgrading Edward and the game didn't get much easier. I had occasional bugs to deal with that had me restarting missions like characters I'm following would walk into walls or the guys I'm eavesdropping on don't trigger their dialogue audio. I should also mention that the graphics are either gorgeous or terrible. The ocean is wonderfully beautiful but the sky is actually pixelated. Like you can count the squares if you wanted. I'm guessing it's the cutbacks from the PS4 version. Still, it's pretty lame that the overall graphics are worse than previous games. If you're a diehard AC fan, you'll play this game anyway. If not, don't worry about this one. It's nothing special. Pick up the Ezio Trilogy for the best in the series.
