I went in store, to my "local" gamestop which is about 24 miles away, 2 towns over expecting to have to settle for a lesser quality pre-owned or refurb system, when I got there I asked if they had any ps3s, so the manager comes back with one, opens the box up for me so that I can inspect the previously owned system....... boy was I blown away at the quality of this system. I am a hard-core nerd when it comes to video game consoles, I research every little aspect of various different video game consoles and there various models and any and differences they may have. Well when I saw this pre-owned 120 gigger I was ecstatic. It was in BEAUTIFUL condition and I mean beautiful. The controller, not so much but, meh. I get the system home and it work wonderfully, no probs what so ever, I mean perfect. Now the reason that I give my review a nine out of ten, is because of the controller. When I got home I had had the controller plugged in for a good minute, upon unplugging the controller from the power source I was prompted on screen to plug the controller into a power supply as the battery was low....... battery in the controller is fried. To this point in time I have to keep the controller permanently plugged into power source and that is the only reason that I did not give a full 10 out of ten. The console itself - immaculate. The controller :P. I am very much into personal gadget refurb, so it doesn't bother me very much at all about the controller, as I plan on buying a replacement shell and brand new batt, but I can imagine how the issue with the controller would probably burn some someone else up.

PlayStation 3 is amazing!
I bought my PS3 pre-owned about a year ago and have not had any problems with it! Although, reading the other reviews, I would suggest that you purchase it in store rather than online. I bought mine in store.
The PS3 Slim is a great console! You can play games, Stream Netflix, watch YouTube, etc... Also, online multiplayer is FREE! One thing I dislike about the PS4 is that you have to pay for PS Plus. Even though PS3 is now considered last-gen, I would still recommend buying it because it is a great console with great games. I plan on buying the PS4 much later when the price is as cheap as the PS3 is now.

PS3 is awesome, but a Pre-Owned? Not worth it!
PS3 120GB (Slim) is good only when it is new!
I have had my PS3 120GB Slim for over about 3 years now and the number of games I have played on it range from 25 to 35. Therefore I have acquired enough experience with the console to let others know about its pros and cons.
Speed: The system runs on a cell microprocessor at 3.2 GHz. This alone states the quality of its exceptional performance. I focus more on this specific feature because when I am gaming I like for the game to run smoothly and if its speed is not enough it is bound to interfere with my gaming experience. I give it an 8/10.
Compatibility with other PS games: The console is capable of running all PS2 games and PSP games along with DVDs and CDs. This is one of the reasons I considered this console over others because I own a lot of previous PlayStation games that I didn’t want to part my ways with and so it deserves a 9/10 for this feature.
Controllers and Accessories: The PS3 is capable of supporting the traditional 4 controllers, and these new controllers have the motion sensors, are wireless and with the latest Dual-Shock 3 technology. The controllers have not changed with regards to looks in comparison to the PS2 controllers. However, the performance has certainly improved. In addition, the system is also compatible to the motion controllers. It has 2 USB ports that can be used to charge your cell phone when gaming. The transition from wire to wireless is great and so a 9/10.
Music: The system allows you to upload music and play if you are bored of doing other things on the system. Even though it has this feature to it, its performance is not the best. 5/10
Video and Graphics: One of the most important reasons for PS3 120GB (slim) to be a valuable purchase is due to the fact that it is capable of supporting Blue-Ray DVD and in fact the games for the console are mostly only in Blue-Ray. The quality it provides is far better than any of the previous games and movies combined when it comes down to using Blue-Ray technology. This feature deserves a 10/10.
PlayStation Network: Bored of gaming, music and movies? The PlayStation network allows you to connect to the virtual world just like a PC does. This feature is great for in game multiplayer, but for browsing and any other thing it is horrible. Therefore a 3/10.
Hard-drive Space: The 2.5-inch SATA hard drive with a 120GB memory is sufficient if you are only interested in playing games. However, for an avid gamer and for someone who loves to store additional data on the system other than games it is not sufficient. Since I am one of those people who loves to add more to my console, I dislike this particular feature. 4/10
Annoyances: The high speed does not come without a cost. When I used it initially, the console did its job but after a couple months it started to make a lot of noise whenever it ran a disc. Personally I wasn’t really annoyed by it but the unnecessary noise just put me at unease. Since it is a gaming console and not a PC, the other extra accessible features such as the browser and music are not the most enjoyable apart for gaming. The console itself has a lot less annoyances compared to the last PlayStation consoles and therefore a 7/10
Value: Now to answer the question of why this purchase is great for new and not pre-owned. I have had the console for a while but due to some misunderstandings I got a pre-owned one with the exact same model and I decided to keep it. The pre-owned one ran great for the first couple months but after that it went to a worse condition because of its used condition. The system heated up faster than my new one and the cooling fans did very little to help it. Another reason to not get this pre-owned one is that if a new one had a few problems then the pre-owned one is bound to have some too in the long run. If you plan on paying a large sum for a pre-owned console, don’t bother. You could just get a new one and have less problems with it. 2/10
Overall, I do not recommend the pre-owned only because it will spoil your experience if you enjoy playing on the PlayStation. I highly recommend the new one, and if you can’t fit that in your budget then this purchase is a waste.

Broken PS3 AND a broken controller
I purchased a used PS3 along with MGS4 and Uncharted 3 yesterday. I plugged everything in and upon startup the controller went nuts and began selecting items at random and eventually set the system preferences in a foreign language! It took about a dozen tries just to get the system in English and set the appropriate outputs. I figured I'd cut GameStop some slack and chalked everything up to a bunk controller...no big deal...it happens, right? After putting in the MGS4 disc I heard odd clicking sounds then heard the eject motor kick in but no disc appeared!! The PS3 retained the disc but nothing loaded. I hit eject and the disc appeared so I tried loading everything again...and again...and again. I even switched to Uncharted 3...still nothing. After over an hour of frustration MGS4 finally loaded. I managed to get a couple hours of enjoyment out of this purchase before everything slowed down and the controller freaked out again causing Snake to just started firing weapons at random!! Stealth Action at its finest! Nothing says sneaking into a highly guarded area quite like randomly firing machine guns a few feet from the guards! Haha,
The "Guaranteed to work" pre-owned guarantee is an absolute joke! I tried to play my games again today and couldn't get anything to load. How did this system pass a quality control inspection if it can't even read a disc?
The system will be returned (hopefully exchanged) tomorrow. I'm not mad at GameStop and I think people should continue buying games and systems from them but I do wish the staff would check the systems for at least minimal functionality seeing as there's a "Guaranteed to work" guarantee!!
I know it would be a bit of a pain but GameStop should hook up the consoles and let the customer witness the console functioning before the purchase is finalized. That way the customer and the staff have proof the system is in fact functional and nobody has to waste their time processing a return or dealing with a frustrated customer. If the system is junk just grab another one from the stockroom. It only takes about 3 minutes to set up and test the machines...that 3 minutes would save your customers long drives and parking hassles and it would save your staff from dealing with unpleasant customers that are justifiably upset!
