PS3 BluWave Remote Control
Ok remote for what I needed
I recently was able to buy the Playstation 3 that I have been wanting for a long time. I knew that I was going to be buying Blu Ray movies and I wanted a remote control for my movie watching. Using the Playstation 3 controller, while functional, was not an ideal way to navigate menus. Also the triggers on the Playstation 3 usually get pressed and interrupt your movie experience when you sit it back down on the couch. I decided to go with the BluWave controller from NYKO. Overall its a pretty good control that does what I needed it to do with a few problems that I will discuss in a few seconds. First lets talk about the design. The controller was designed well in terms of button layout and hand placement and fits comfortably in your hands while using it. The plastic material its made out of on the other hand makes it feel cheap and makes it seem like its easily breakable. This remote is not bluetooth compatible so you have to use a usb dongle in order to use this remote. Its not a deal breaker for me because I only use one usb connection to charge my controller so its not an issue of lack of open usbs. I'm sure there are people out there that use all of them constantly so its something to think about before buying it. Also while the dongle is plugged in it seems really flimsy and if it was hit by accident it might break inside your PS3. I plugged it in once and never touched it again so its not an issue. I've seen a few other websites say that because its an IR Receiver you have to point it directly at the receiver or it won't work. I have never had an issue with that before. I tried pointing it in multiple directions including away from the dongle at my walls, floor, and even at myself and it worked perfectly. Button presses work great and there is no lag between presses even when navigating the XMB. I use it for Blu Ray movies, Netflix, listening to music, and watching videos in the XMB. The biggest issue I have with it is there is not enough buttons on the remote. Its a lot smaller than the PS3 Blue Ray movie remote made by Sony but you lose many buttons that would be beneficial to your Blu Ray movie experience like subtitles for starters. Overall its a pretty good remote that works for what I needed it to do. I still say if your looking for a remote to do your Blu Ray movie watching and want something that your going to be using for a long time to come then go with Sony's remote. Its build quality is a lot better and has the additional buttons you need for movie watching. Spend the extra money now and your reap the rewards later!
Dongle worth more than remote.
I bought this primarily for the dongle to use with my Harmony Remote. The Harmony has an option for this remote so all you have to do is select it with your Harmony software and plug the dongle in your PS3. The only downside is that it will not power on the PS3 but I have to be near the unit to put a disc in anyhow so a minor issue really. I did use it as a stand alone remote before using the Harmony and it was solid in it's performance. Not the quickest responding remote but primary menu options were easy to use. You can find these for super cheap and the dongle makes it super easy to intergrate your PS3 into a Harmony remote system, something I highly recommend!!!
great but several problems..
Ok i thought hey a cheap remote solution for the playstation 3 cheap is right i found this remote to be a worthless piece of junk and i do mean junk not because of its design or comfort but because nyko in there wisdom or stupidity depends how you look at it forgot to include a guide button kinda important when you want to shut down the ps3 huh but at last you cannot shut down the console with the remote control then i thought great so i have to turn on my six axis controller just to shut down the console kinda lame and for the price point i would rather buy sony's remote at least it shuts down the console. a nice attempt to make a remote but in the end a epic failure on nykos part i cant even imagine what the designer was thinking oops we dont need a guide button wrong we need a guide button
Buy the Sony one
This thing is a piece. It looks like it, feels like it, acts like it. Takes up a USB port to use the bluetooth, and I found it wasn't easy to connect regardless.
Worth The Cost
This product tends to steal first player, but other then that and the missing "home" button it is a great little remote for videos, music, and photos. It is completely worth $10 if you want a remote but do not want to pay too much.
