plain and simple, I didn't like it
THE GOOD- great story. good voice acting. lots of realism if you like that in a game. cutscenes felt like a movie (minus the ok graphics). it was funny to here the dialouge spoken with a british accent. hearing the f word in that accent made me crack up. THE BAD- complicated. driving around the city would have been easier if a map was given to you. sense of realism was too high. i did not enjoy how the cars felt. the only way you could recover was lean next to a wall but you could not do that if enemies were still around and trust me there are too many unwanted enemies ENDING- if this game had a movie i would see it because it had a good story but as a game it did not fly well with me.

EPIC!!!
I rented the game when I was 6, but I didn't understand it. I Bought it last year when GameCrazy went out of business, and I have been hooked ever since. Although it would be easier to give hints in game, I learned techniques in the pause screen, like how to recover health. The game itself was a lot more realistic than any Grand Theft Auto game before 4. Playing as Mark, the vengeful ex-criminal, was a man-against-the-world type style as you fight to recover your son. DC Carter's lone-ranger cop style contradicts the first half of the game, working against the very things you caused before to reveal his chief's corrupt life. The blend of genres suits many gamers, from sneaking missions to action-packed firefights. This is a once-in-a-lifetime game!

Didn't like it.
when i bought this game,i fought it would be good and worth 2 bucks.when i got home i played it,i regretted buying it and returned it for a refund.the graphics and lasting appeal are poor and it's like impossible to play and complete the first mission! They don't even show you how to play!I don't recommend it.There are better games out there you know.

BEST. GAME. EVAR.
this game is so fun. the first mission was really hard though. but i guess that was because i was playing it for the first time. now that i know how to play better, i absolutely love this game! i would recommend this to 100 friends!

my opinion
1st thing that was awsome was the grafics i cant belive how good they were. 2nd the story was a little confusing because first 12 missions you play as a criminal the the other 12 you play as a cop. 3rd the thing that i dont like is that you can free rome!!! witch is pritty stupid because the city is london and i would like to explore it. 4th if you like being a criminal then a cop this is a good game for you.

Realism in a ps2 game!
This game really, truly, blew me away. First thing I noticed while playing is the extremely realistic graphics. And yes, I know that ps2 can only show realism so much, but this game really pushes the system to the max to make sure that the game looks like the real thing. The fact that the developers recreated almost all of london's streets really impresses me, and it shows when you're playing. Everything is integrated into the missions and gameplay very well. Sadly, the controls are not very good. It's kind of difficult moving your character around the city on foot, however, when in a car, it's pretty easy to drive. The game is kind of short, clocking it at about 8 or more hours of gameplay, depending on how fast you can beat the missions. The story is very, very good, and much better than the story in the sequel, The Getaway: Black Monday. I won't ruin the story for you. Just play the game. If you enjoy playing through a game that feels real and looks real, and makes you feel like you're playing through a well-scripted movie, then you need this game. Gamestop has it for really cheap now, too. In my opinion, this game is a playstation 2 classic. Play it, you will love it.

Great Game.
I played this game years ago when it first came out and its still great today. It's a classic and not a GTA rip off. This game has it own style and way of doing things and it works. Its simply a great game that I will never get rid of. The game is not too short, there are 24 missions total. You play 12 missions as a "criminal" and 12 missions as a police officer tracking the "criminal". Its a great story for mature audiences only due to language and content. The game is very artsy in the sense that there are no health bar's or ammo indicators. You need to stand close to a wall so you'll character will lean up against it to regain his health. You visually can see your characters health by the number of bloodstains on his clothing or how he's walking. It's definitely worth the price if you've never played it--used or new.

One big headache
For some reason or another I liked The Getaway more than any of the Grand Theft Auto games. Maybe it's because The Getaway isn't free roaming like the GTA series; there are levels with strict instructions so it keeps you focused and the story moving. Maybe it's the British accents (the game takes place in London) instead of the Italian wise guy voice of Ray Liotta. I just couldn't stand his voice. Challenge - The game isn't tough, it's just that the developers messed up on a lot of things that makes the game almost unplayable. The game has on the foot shooting levels and then levels where you're driving a car (either chasing bad guys or trying to escape from them). When you're on foot the camera just can't keep up with the action so it open spaces it swings wildly or in closed areas it bumps into walls, never giving you a good view of the enemies you're trying to shoot. I wanted to throw my controller at the tv at so many points of the game. On the driving levels, there's no map on screen. The car will have its turn signals on telling you whether you should go left or right. Sounds like a neat idea but when you're trying to escape from the police and you miss a turn it can be hell trying to get back onto the correct route. Sights and Sounds - It looks better than the GTA games, more realistic, capturing almost all of London, but then the city is just for looking. You cannot interact i.e., go into any of the buildings, parks, etc. The voiceover work is very good and sounds like a British gangster movie with lots of cursing. Other - The game isn't very long, but because of the problems mentioned above, you'll be repeating certain levels over and over. After you beat the game, you do unlock a second playable character so if you want to go through hell again you can.
