Rated 7 out of 10 by Smallvillefn1 Great Game here are my comments.
I really enjoyed this game. I am not a hardecore gamer to say the least. but i have some suggestions for that would have made it better: 1 there needs to be x-ray vision. let me expalain how i would like it to work. hit the down directional button (which does nothing in the game), sort of like heat vision is up, this will enable you to see through buildings and maybe even fly through some of them (like through the windows). 2 The new dirver SF game just came out and there is a boost button (R3 toggle up). that enables the driver to boost. that could be the sound barrier button in this game. (have a meter bar)3 he should be able to fly to space, go underwater and get from A to B quicker in the game. (see, in superman the movie he flew aroung the world 1000 time in less than 30 seconds)

The gameplay is just amazing! The powers this game allows you to use while playing as superman is just awesome. The free realm is fantastic you can fly all around the city and fight bad guys and fly at super sonic speed! i recommend this game to pretty much anyone.

Rated 8 out of 10 by Supermanfan Nice game to pass the time
The game had a lot of potential to acheive greatness but other than that, it is still a pretty good game to play
Rated 5 out of 10 by EzioAuditore Had potential for greatness, but disappointing.
I remember when I first heard about Superman Returns how excited I was for it. An open world sandbox title for the man of steel seemed like the perfect premise, where you could do whatever you wanted and truly harness the powers of Superman. Sadly though, the game falls flat, thanks to a few terrible issues. Superman Returns doesn't have much of a story. In fact, think of it more as a game that is in the movie universe that just has a couple of cutscenes with similar dialogue from scenes from the film and that is about it. Nothing really ties together to make an interesting narrative. Of course, however, this wouldn't matter much of the game was as awesome as it sounded, being able to have the best Superman experience ever. Well, to be honest, it fails in this respect. To start out positive, however, the flying is great, and really nails the sense of speed and power from Superman. Metropolis is huge, and flying around it is a treat, and the sense of speed is exhilarating. Also, the core mechanics of Superman's heat vision, freeze breath, and force breath are smooth and responsive. Aside from these pros, however, things fall flat. To start, the enemies consist of repetitive robot, alien, and mutant battles. Nothing really varies in the enemy type and it makes the combat feel stale. Also, Superman's hand to hand combat is slow, clumsy, and unresponsive at points. It needed more speed and power, but unfortunately it ended up being slow and clunky. The enemies are often too easy to defeat, but cheap tactics and counters to your combat maneuvers can also make them a frustrating chore. The bosses that are in the game also don't have much variety, and there isn't really a great scale when you are completing the mostly boring missions. All of the missions seem to blend together after a while, and nothing is very fun. Also, Superman Returns doesn't give you much time to experiment with your awesome powers during the missions. Metropolis is given a health meter, due to the fact that Superman can't die, so you are constantly fighting to keep the city alive and always on your toes. This is another major problem with the game, because it makes every battle have a sense of urgency to get it done, and also makes everything just more tedious and frustrating. It makes sense that Superman can't die, but having the Metropolis health meter also didn't help. So all in all, Superman Return's gameplay is average and disappointing. Greater variety and better hand to hand combat would have helped. On the flip side, the sound department is every bit as average as the gameplay. The music in the game is pretty decent and does a good job at making the action more exciting, no matter how boring it can get. The sound design of the powers and the effects are pretty cool too. When you are flying at high speeds, Superman will break the sound barrier, and it sounds awesome. The city could have more life, however, and the voice acting sounds about as tiresome as the rest of the game. The graphics are also terrible, with bad textures, a boring looking city, and a terrible frame rate on the Playstation 2. The game is also pretty short, lasting about 5 hours, and there isn't much reason to come back to it. All in all, there were hints of greatness from this title from the idea of an open world Superman game, the awesome flight mechanics, and the huge array of powers. But the game is bogged down with far too many flaws, making the game suffer. Hopefully next time around Superman will fly past the Kryptonite.
